| June 6, 1984: Remembering the Call to Awakening |
|
Twenty-seven years ago, on June 6, 1984, the sacred Sikh throne of the Akal Takhat came under attack. It was a tragic situation for the Sikh community.
Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji believed that the Akal Takhat could never be destroyed without its own consent. He viewed the events of that day as a conscious and willing decision on the part of the Akal Takhat to sacrifice itself in order to awaken the spirit of the Khalsa
On June 6, as we once again remember this tragic and sacred event, SDI is grateful to share the Siri Singh Sahib's message about the martyrdom of the Akal Takhat.
To get a sense of the events as they were experienced at the time, we recommend the historical pamphlet Sikhs: Fighting for Justice. Published by the Sikh Dharma Secretariat in 1984.

Martyrdom of the Akal Takhat

Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji
It is my understanding that there is no such thing as an accident. I classify accidents as initial actions. Accidents are initial actions because their spontaneous occurrence is the first event in a new and unforeseen direction. The initial action is the pivot on which the energy changes its focus away from what it had been up to the moment preceding the so-called accident. These initial accidents have altered the course of nations, altered the life of communities, and transformed the lives of the people. I agree one hundred percent that we as Sikhs have been hit. We have been hit harshly and the times are very hard. But we are fortunate that we have been hit so harshly. It is the first step which had to be taken to turn our energy towards ourselves as Sikhs. Now we will obey our Guru and we will find the God within ourselves.
If this situation in India could happen - and it has happened - then it must be the will of God because God is everything. All things come from God and all things go to God. Now we find ourselves under siege. Eleven million Sikhs are under siege. It is a war of identity... There is an initial action that has taken place to force us to come to our identity of Khalsa. That initial action was performed by Akal Takhat. Akal Takhat has reached its own martyrdom. Nobody could destroy Akal Takhat. I don't believe anybody could. If it was possible, then it could have happened many times before. Akal Takhat, the throne of the imperial as well as the divine power, has come to question if we are worthy to keep it. Are we worthy to keep it ever in its glory or not? This is a very internal question. Click here to download a PDF of the original pamphlet, and read the entire lecture. Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji Video Lecture, June 6, 1985
"When people do slander, do insult, do say mean things which meaninglessly are meant to hurt a person - the very prayer at that time to bless them in forgiveness is the highest prayer ever God in a human body could have Himself done. That is why Guru Arjan could forgive; Guru Teg Bahadur could sacrifice; Buddha could just peacefully give his body; and so Jesus could go on the cross and could forgive those who at that time were enjoying nailing him on the cross. Guru Arjan could forgive and bless those who were responsible for putting him on the hot plate and putting burning hot sand over his body - baking him like a baked potato. There was no difference. Me and you in our sensitivity can feel the pain. But you do not understand the joy of those people at that time - because they were giving back to God this body as an offering...Those who are responsible for attacking the Akal Takhat - whatever their reason is - we are grateful to them today. They have awakened us."
