Awakening of the Khalsa
|
|

On June 6, 1984, the Akal Takhat, the seat of religious authority for Sikhs, was attacked. Many remember the tanks and bullets and thousands of lives lost, yet through the lens of the unseen, we see God in everything. Like the phoenix that rises from the ashes, Khalsa will always prevail.
The Siri Singh Sahib poses, "In the history of our universe, this is the first time a place with the identity of rulership of the ether and of the earth, mortal and immortal, a central source of that energy, that psyche, that nucleus has sacrificed itself." Why would the Akal Takht - the Throne of Deathless Infinity - sacrifice itself?
We believe it is an opportunity - a wake up call. Now is the time for Khalsa to unite in the spirit of the Undying, Infinite Truth embodied in the Akal Takht. In honor of all sacrifices that have paved this path we walk together, let this anniversary awaken the spirit of the Khalsa within you!
Sikh Dharma International invites you to celebrate this awakening with us. Starting with Baisakhi of 2009 and continuing through June, we will release 11 historic video Gurdwara lectures by the Siri Singh Sahib in which he explains the significance of this event in depth and how it relates to Sikhs and the whole of humanity. Join us in this journey of awakening in this season of renewal.
These video lectures will be available on our website and will also air on the national cable station, JusPunjabi.

Greetings from Ravi Kaur, Executive Director

I love this beautiful time of Spring. It brings up for me such a sense of renewal (of allergy prescriptions), rebirth (my new year's resolutions), and commitment (to get in shape). I love Spring's special kind of energy; the leaves are budding, the birds are chirping and the wind is blowing. I also love this time of year because this is the time of Baisakhi. As I head out to Los Angeles today to participate and help with the Baisakhi celebrations with the community there, the memories of all the stories I've heard of this celebration since I was small girl start to come back to me. When Guru Gobind Singh took the stage and called out for the head of 5 Sikhs. With a raised sword, he called out to the crowd, "I need a head!" The first Sikh approaches with full faith, love and devotion, and Guru Gobind Singh takes him into a tent. When the Guru comes out of the tent, he is alone and his sword is dripping with blood. The second man who comes forward already knows that the situation looks bleak. Is Guru Gobind Singh really beheading his Sikhs in the tent? He continues to call out until More...

The First Baiskahi by Siri Singh Sahib
Three hundred and some years ago, the finite being known as Guru Gobind Singh, the father of the Khalsa, could see the unseen times to come. He understood completely in the very depth of his being that times were going to come when humanity would have unlimited technology of the machine but would be very limited in their technology of the mind...more.

Immerse Yourself in the Splendor of the Shabad Guru
Sikh Dharma International is very excited to share three wonderful opportunities to immerse yourself in the splendor of the Shabad Guru; a Japji Sahib Course, a Gurbani Kirtan Intensive and a Bliss Yatra to India.
In July, Sikh Dharma International will be hosting two back-to-back events in Espanola, New Mexico. First, a Japji Sahib Course with Ek Ong Kaar Kaur (July 5th-7th) comprising 2 full days of meditation, discussion and music where participants will deeply experience the message and method of Guru Nanak's Japji Sahib. Yogi Bhajan said, "Japji Sahib is initiation and instigating your soul to make your environments healthy, happy, and holy. When you understand it, you will be prosperous, pure, and perfect."
Immediately following the Japji Sahib Course will be a Gurbani Kirtan Intensive with Snatam Kaur (July 7th - 14th) designed to awaken the inner voice through ancient singing techniques. Snatam Kaur and guest presenters will guide the group in the development of personal relationships to the meanings of the sacred Shabads (songs) and learn the healing language of Gurbani Kirtan, and Gurmukhi. Rejoice in the rhythm, and gain confidence to sing with grace and power.
In keeping with the wonderful tradition of India Yatras, Sikh Dharma International is hosting a Bliss Yatra between November 9th and 20th in India. You are invited to join the journey to Amritsar, Goindwal and Anandpur Sahib, to meditate at the holy shrines, spend four days in Anadpur Sahib studying and understanding Guru Amar Das' Anand Sahib: The Song of Bliss, and share in life changing experiences.
For course details and registration, including special discounts for signing up for both summer courses, please visit Sikh Dharma International or contact Sat Jiwan Kaur Khalsa at sdsatjiwank@sikhdharma.org or 505.629.4721.
