One of the many things that I have learned over time is just because you are selling the most products does not necessarily mean that you are the one who is leading your industry. Another thing that I have learned at the "University of Hard Knocks" is if you are selling the most products you must keep up with the industry leaders or you won't be sales leader for long.
Surge Suppression Incorporated is not the industry sales leader. The last VDC Report on North American Surge Suppression Manufacturers listed us at number 10. This is a respectable position considering we are one of only two SPD manufacturers in the "Top 10" that is privately owned and not a part of a large corporate conglomerate. SSI specializes in surge suppression products and we excel at what we do. Recently, a church in Alabama called upon the expertise of SSI to assist with an ever-increasing problem. Lightning damage had forced the church to submit two claims to their insurance company within ten years. As a result, the insurance company, to whom this client had paid premiums for fifteen years, was now refusing to renew their policy. In addition, it was becoming increasingly clear, while searching for new coverage, that every company was going to require installation of a surge suppression system prior to considering and/or writing continued insurance coverage.
SSI conducted a survey of the property to determine the best surge suppression system for the customer's particular needs. A detailed report of Surge Protective Device (SPD) recommendations was presented to our client. Shortly thereafter, an order was placed and a multi-level SPD system was installed. Units were placed on every main service panel as a first level of protection. To further guard against damage, a second layer of SPD protection was added to panels that controlled the elevator, million dollar organ, fire alarms, and high tech computer panels that adjusted the heating/cooling.
As fate would have it, one week following installation the client's power provider lost a phase during routine maintenance conducted by the city on the power pole serving the church. A test of the system revealed that the pole's safety jack failed to trip, resulting in a substantial over voltage environment for several minutes down line.
Inspection of all systems after this incident showed that six of SSI's devices had sacrificed themselves as designed. In addition, of the 26 control boards feeding the auto-logic system for the AC controllers, only 2 were affected. The city paid to replace those two boards as our client had implemented SPD full systems coverage. What could have been a catastrophic event proved to be minor. In addition to gaining a satisfied customer, our client has since secured the necessary SPDs to protect a new building.

William Banker joined SSI in 2001 as a Construction Bid Salesman. After quickly developing into a Regional Sales Manager, he currently holds the title of Federal Account Director. During his tenure, he has proven himself invaluable as a strong leader in management and support for the corporation. His account development has included commercial, industrial and residential clients; as well as tailored technical support to engineers, contractors and electrical distributors. Will helped to maintain a close working relationship with design engineers within the U.S. Department of State Embassy Construction over the past 9 years. Anyone that knows him will confirm that his "can do" attitude is contagious!
Will attended Saint Petersburg College, Clearwater campus. He is a member of the Society of Military Engineers (SAME) and the Association of School Business Officials of Maryland & District of Columbia (ASBO). He has been in the SPD/TVSS field for 12 yrs. His knowledge of expertise is SPD/TVSS solutions for electrical distribution systems, telecom and data as well as Design & Consulting Engineer support. Although Will is based in SSI's Corporate Sales Office in Northwest Florida, his area of responsibility is the Mid-Atlantic (northern VA, DC and MD) markets.
Will lives in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, with his wife Kristin and their 4 year old son, Ethan. Their family is in the process adopting their second son, Tariku, from Ethiopia. Away from the office, he enjoys spending time with family, playing golf, enjoying the beach and riding motorcycles.
