An estimated 307,000 lightning insurance claims are filed each year in the United States. That's about 1 claim for every 57 cloud to ground lightning strikes. It is also estimated that lightning causes about $400,000,000 in damages each year in the United States. (reported by Weather Imagery)

SURGE PROTECTIVE DEVICE (SPD) BASICS SERIES

Surge Suppression '102'
Rick Lindsay, SSI Director
We all know that IEEE recommends at least three levels of protection where it is possible, the object being to reduce the magnitude of surges entering a facility at the service entrance to a negligible level at the protected equipment. The added benefit of this approach is to reduce the impact of surges that are internally generated and may never reach the service entrance unit before damaging sensitive equipment within the facility. This is called the cascade or systems approach and is the approach that SSI takes in providing complete TVSS systems.
I have been told by a competing rep of nearly 20 years, who has a close relationship with his manufacturer, that they don't put a lot of emphasis on let through voltage because their priority is to have their large service entrance unit (which has equally large let through voltage performance) survive the surge events so it can keep "protecting" the load equipment. This is counter to the IEEE recommendation described above and results in allowing larger let through voltages. Referring back to our basics of surge suppression in our last newsletter, what is the real priority? Tiny let through voltages. Anything else is secondary!
Several of our competitors have products in which they have incorporated varying designs to protect the Surge Protective Device (SPD) from being damaged by long-term overvoltages. The purpose is to protect the suppression components for a period of time in the event that line voltage reaches a point that exceeds the clamping voltage of the suppression components. In third world countries this may be an issue, but not in the United States. It is a cost that has no "real" justification because sustained overvoltage situations are not a common problem. SSI's warranty replacement records bear out this fact. It only becomes an issue when a competing rep. makes it an issue so that he can divert your attention to a place where his product has a "perceived" advantage. Once again, they have placed their emphasis on producing a SPD that can "survive" rather than producing a SPD that has what? Yes, low-let-through voltages. Anything else is secondary!
My reason for sharing this information with you is simply this. It appears that our competitors have felt the need to create all manner of things to help them sell product, most of which are either inaccurate, frivolous or unimportant. Our job is to help our customers cut through the smoke screen and focus, as we have, on the "real" reason for TVSS. That is?? You are absolutely correct, low-let-through voltages! Anything else is secondary.
In our next segment, we will cover a few more of these important points to help you avoid getting caught up in "secondary" issues.

Success Story...

... as recalled by Rob Baczewski
SSI's Consulting & Technical Support Director
Several years ago a customer and local municipality called me in to survey their ball fields. They had been experiencing lightning damage to the irrigation system and scoreboards. This included damage to pump controllers, pumps, scoreboard controllers, field lighting, and circuit boards. The cost of these repairs was substantial and ongoing. After experiencing damage for another couple of years, they realized this problem was not going away and decided to invest in surge protection.
We worked with their electrician and installed CKL units inside the irrigation pump house at the main entrance and breaker panel. More ground rods were driven to get the resistance under 25 ohms. We then installed RES units at the scoreboard disconnect and DM24A6 units in series with the outside scoreboard data lines and inside at the control panel. These had to be mounted in WX enclosures to protect them from the elements and of course, baseballs!
Since completion and after several storms, there have been no lightning or surge damages to the protected equipment. Success!
