It doesn't seem like a day goes by where our attention is not drawn to the fact that Solar & Wind Power is here to stay. Wind farms are expanding at alarming rates across various parts of the country. Solar panels now decorate roof tops of upscale buildings, as well as become part of the landscaping of numerous commercial locations.
Wind turbines ascend into the sky capturing the high level wind currents while creating a surprising amount of power. However, as large and powerful as these are, they can be brought to a catastrophic halt in an instant. A direct lightning hit, as seen in the photo below, is one way that these turbines can be destroyed. Even more common; and just as damaging, low level induced surges from cloud to cloud lightning or nearby cloud to ground events can damage the sensitive equipment that converts the raw power from the turbines into synchronized useful power on the electrical grid. The same kind of effect occurs within solar collectors, as well as the attached critical systems which allow them to perform as designed.

Surge suppression is the solution to prevent this kind of damage from occurring and Surge Suppression Incorporated (website) is the company with the answers.
For the last three years, SSI has noticed this trend gaining momentum. At the recent Surge Suppression Incorporated National Sales Conference, we covered these demands for the third consecutive meeting and also released a new product line exclusive to these applications.
It was determined that SSI needed to provide the market with a specialized line of products for these applications, as the requirements for voltage and environment are truly unique. Over the next several newsletters, we will feature and thoroughly discuss these green solutions. Have an immediate need? Our engineers are standing by to provide engineering specifications, installation sheets & information and product specifications. To chat with an engineer, please follow this link.
The Solar & Wind product line will carry the designation of "SG". These products carry Surge Suppression Incorporated's exclusive 25 year warranty and cover the many different voltage configurations found with Solar & Wind applications. We even have products to cover the higher DC voltages employed in some of these systems.
A number of the products utilize our Frequency Response Circuitry, more commonly referred to as Sine Wave Tracking. Look for these outstanding features in the product specifications in issues to follow or simply select the engineering contact link mentioned above for assistance.
Our staff engineers are trained to assist in developing a protection plan for your equipment, whether it be Solar & Wind or customizing our products to your specific requirements.
We look forward to sharing additional information on our Solar & Wind products and providing you with product guidance for these systems. |

Seasonal Sizzle: Father's Day, June 20, 2010
Courtesy of: morning-glow.com |
What Makes a Dad?
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of all ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of the morning in Spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew his masterpiece was complete,
And so, he called it... Dad.
Father's Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. It is also celebrated to honor and commemorate our fathers and forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide. The first observance is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Dodd from Spokane, Washington.
Sonora Smart Dodd thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church in Spokane. She wanted a celebration that honored fathers that were like her own father, William Smart. He was a Civil War veteran, whose wife died when Sonora was 16. In the eyes of his daughter, he was a courageous, selfless and loving man while raising his six children.
On June 19, 1910, she arranged a tribute for her father in Spokane. in 1909, she had previously enlisted the help of the Spokane Ministerial association, and young members of the YMCA who went to church wearing roses: a red rose to honor a living father, and a white rose to honor a deceased one. Dodd traveled through the city in a closed carriage, carrying gifts to shut-in fathers. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers.
It took many years to make the holiday official. In spite of support from the YWCA, the YMCA and churches, it ran the risk of disappearing from the calendar. Where Mother's Day was met with enthusiasm, Father's Day was met with laughter. The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper Spokesman-Review. Many people saw it as just the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions like "Grandparent's Day", "Professional Secretaries' Day", etc., all the way down to "National Clean Your Desk Day."
A bill was introduced in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official; but Congress resisted, fearing that it would be commercialized. In 1924, U.S. President Calvin Coolidge recommended that the celebration be held, and a national committee was formed in the 1930s by trade groups in order to legitimize the holiday. Another two bills to introduce the holiday were defeated. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our own parents" In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made a proclamation for the third Sunday of June to be Father's Day, but it was not made an official national holiday until President Nixon made a proclamation in 1972.
In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is
celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men
and boys who are not fathers.
