Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)...
Is Yours Adequately Protected? |
For more than 20 years we have proclaimed the virtues and necessity of protecting the INPUT to a UPS system with an SPD (surge protective device). While there is no panacea or "one size fits all" when it comes to Power Protection; a UPS system comes the closest. A quality, True on Line Double-Conversion UPS will provide all in one box; Voltage Regulation, Power Conditioning, Battery Back-Up plus limited surge protection (i.e. maybe just a couple of MOV's). While UPS manufacturers have touted the surge suppression built into their wares; we have seen and heard real-life nightmares of expensive equipment; supported by a UPS system taken out by a surge or lightning strike. Recently Surge Suppression Incorporated conducted tests on all three different UPS typologies - stand-by, line interactive and double conversion.
SERIES 1 Just a basic stand by - off-line - UPS (should be called an SPS as UPS stands for uninterruptible). This type is just basic back-up unit with limited battery support time and typical 4 millisecond transfer time to battery.
SERIES 2 Line Interactive models, a little more advanced than the stand-by, virtually no transfer to battery time and offering both Buck and Boost input regulation.
SERIES 3 True On Line, High Frequency Double Conversion units, no switch time, "hot" inverter/rectifier.
SSI performed a series of two surge tests utilizing a 2,000v 67A 100kHz osciliatory ringwave on each of the three different series; the first WITHOUT an SPD protecting the input to the unit and the second WITH an SPD protecting the input.
SSI Model SSPT120-30 (120v 30amp SPD with Frequency Responsive Network) was used in the testing to document Let-Through-Voltage after the impulse was registered.
Following are the results:
SERIES 1
Line to Neutral L-N
- Without SPD 99v
- With SPD 27v
Line to Ground L-G
- Without SPD 587v
- With SPD 35v
Neutral to Ground N-G
- Without SPD 596v
- With SPD 25v
SERIES 2
Line to Neutral L-N
- Without SPD 48v
- With SPD 15v
Line to Ground L-G
- Without SPD 675v
- With SPD 18v
Neutral to Ground N-G
- Without SPD 787v
- With SPD 26v
SERIES 3
Line to Neutral L-N
-
Without SPD 18v
- With SPD 13v
Line to Ground L-G
- Without SPD 1,397v
- With SPD 23v
Neutral to Ground N-G
- Without SPD 1,404v
- With SPD 27v
In conclusion, the UPS typically has decent protection for spikes between L-N. However, all technologies tested have entirely inadequate protection from L-G and N-G.

Seasonal Sizzle: Happy Mother's Day, May 9th, 2010

A Mother...
carries the child in her womb for nine months
and in her heart for the rest of her life.
In the U.S.A., Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, every year. The day has been designated as a national holiday in America. On this day, the national flag is hoisted on every house as well as on all the important buildings, to mark the auspiciousness of the day and celebrate motherhood. Mother's Day is the day to pamper your mother for all what she has done for you, over the years. Emotions run high on this day, as every child makes use of the opportunity to express love and respect for his/her mother.
Looking back, Mother's Day celebration in the U.S. is seen to be about a century old. It was efforts put in by a loving daughter, Ms. Anna Jarvis, that led to the creation of such a day. However, the first idea was given by the writer-poet Julia Ward Howe, in 1872. She had also written a Mother's Day proclamation, as a call for peace, but failed in her attempts to get a formal recognition for the day. The idea was then employed by Ann Jarvis, mother of Anna Jarvis. She started off with a call for improvisation of sanitary conditions, which she called Mother's Work Days.
Throughout the Civil War, Ann organized women to work for better sanitary conditions, across the borders as well. It was in 1868 that she began to work for the reconciliation of Union and Confederate neighbors. The death of Ann Jarvis in 1905 did not halt the work started by her, as her daughter carried the crusade a little further. In the year 1907, Anna Jarvis ordered 500 white carnations at her mother's church - St. Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Each mother present in the congregation was presented with one of the white carnations.
Anna chose Sunday to be Mother's Day because, she intended the day to be commemorated and treated as a Holy Day. It was her hard work and struggle that made the then President of America, President Woodrow Wilson, declare the second Sunday of May as the official Mother's Day ,on the 8th of May, 1914. St. Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church came to be regarded as the International Mother's Day Shrine, a national historical landmark in America. At the same time, carnations became the flower that represented Mother's Day.
Even today, a trend of wearing carnations on Mother's Day can be seen. Carnations of different colors hold different meanings. While white carnation is worn by people whose mother has deceased, a red or pink one indicates that the person's mother is alive. On this day, children take up the initiative to make their mother feel special. From the morning breakfast to the evening dessert, mothers are treated with delicacies made by their children as well as traditional flowers, homemade/commercial cards, candies and gifts.
Honor any mother you know this May 9th.
A simple "Thanks" or "You Are Loved" are sentiments she fails to hear enough! |
