Standard for Surge Protective Devices
'Intermediate Current Tests" |
As previously discussed, the Limited Current Abnormal Overvoltage Test, the Intermediate Current Test and Short Circuit Current Tests in Third Edition are done using an abnormal overvoltage and available fault current rather than a specific current value impressed through the device.
The Intermediate Current Test was initially introduced in the revision to UL 1449 Second Edition in February 2007. Since the inception of UL 1449 Second Edition, UL has conducted Abnormal Overvoltage Tests at both the low or limited current level and at the high current level (Short Circuit Current Test). There were some industry representatives, however, that believed there was a need to capture the SPD response at the intermediate current levels as well; thus, the introduction of the Intermediate Current Test. The concept is that by providing testing at the limited or low current levels, intermediate current levels and high current levels, we are providing a broad sweep of the SPD response.
The available fault current utilized in these tests varies based on SPD Type and the specific test being conducted. For the Intermediate Current Tests, the following applies:

If pass criteria is met as per the standard, then Leakage Current or Grounding Continuity tests are performed based on SPD design. |
In all cases, the pass criteria for the Current Tests are as follows:
During and following the tests, the following conditions shall NOT result -
-
Emission of flame, molten metal, glowing or flaming particles through any openings (preexisting or created as a result of the test) in the product,
-
Charring, glowing or flaming of the supporting surface, tissue paper or cheesecloth,
-
Ignition of the enclosure,
-
Creation of any openings in the enclosure that result in accessibility of live parts, when evaluated in accordance with the Accessibility of Live Parts Test in 58.2,
-
Loss of structural integrity to a degree that the equipment collapses or experiences such displacement of parts that there is a risk of short-circuiting or grounding of current-carrying.
The overall purpose of these tests is to ensure that when an SPD is subjected to an abnormal overvoltage anomaly, regardless of whether the anomaly takes place with a low, Intermediate or high available fault current, the device responds appropriately and does not create a fire or shock hazard. |

Unique Easter Basket Ideas |
With the Easter holiday quickly approaching, most
parents are thinking about what to put in their
children's Easter baskets. Here are some great ideas
to add some excitement to your kid's baskets and
spare the extra dentist's visits. While jelly beans and
chocolate eggs are always popular with the kids, you may want to include some 'not so sugary treats'.
With that in mind, think of their Easter basket as sort
of an "Easter stocking" instead. Be creative!
There are a multitude of different things to include in a
basket that are just as enjoyable as traditional Easter
basket ideas. Your local dollar/discount stores can be
a treasure trove of affordable, but unique, ideas.
TOYS
Toys are always a hit with the kids. From 'Crazy Bands' and 'Glow Sticks' to popular action figures like Barbie Dolls and Transfomers make a unique Easter basket idea that is sure to delight your child. You can also add simple toys such as bubbles, sidewalk chalk, dolls, small cars, plush toys, crayons, markers, puzzles, doll clothes, board games, sports balls and coloring/activity books to name a few. Keep your child's age and gender in mind as you consider what to include, as every toy is not suitable for every child.
BOOKS
It has been said that reading to your child brings many benefits to his/her development. An Easter themed story book is not only a more healthy Easter basket idea, but you now have a great chance to spend some quality time with your child as you both settle down and enjoy a good story book. For kids that can read, select books appropriate for their reading level and interests. Then, sit back and proudly appreciate a good story being read to you!
DVD's, CD's, VIDEO GAMES
Imagine your child's surprise when they see that the Easter bunny even gives out movies! Choose a DVD with your child's favorite character. Including a favorite CD for them to enjoy is equally pleasing. They can sing along to their favorite songs while enjoying a new toy or hunting for Easter eggs. Another alternative could be to include a new video game - perhaps even one the whole family can enjoy.
COLLECTABLES
Children, of every age, love adding to their collections. Search the internet or specialty shops for items to proudly include and display as collectables. A few ideas for starting a life long collection include stamps, coins, figurines, plates, dolls, candles, trading cards, stuffed animals and sports memorabilia.
HEALTHIER SWEET TREATS
There are other sweet snacks that make great Easter basket treats. Most kids love fruit roll ups which, depending on the brand, are much healthier than candy. Even if you choose chocolate covered raisins, there is still a health benefit to your child snacking on a handful of fruit instead of a handful of sugar loaded candy. Don't forget to include a big shiny piece of their favorite fresh seasonal fruit.
MONEY/GIFT CARDS
One can never go wrong with cold hard cash. Plastic Easter eggs are a perfect place to stash a few dollar bills for children. Older kids will enjoy having a little extra spending money of their own. Younger children will appreciate the independence associated with using gift cards to buy something they like from their favorite toy store. Giving a few dollars to spend is a great opportunity to start teaching them how to manage money wisely - as life long habits start early.
The possibilities are limited only by your imagination! Give your child healthy alternatives to conventional Easter basket candy and most assuredly - an Easter to remember! | |
