| Greetings!
Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a reunion of people I knew in my teen years here in Reston. My mother and sister were here visiting as well, so there was no shortage of fun card games, good meals, old memories, and conversations about our lives and how they are changing.
Our life choices - how we make them, whether they are consciously made or blindly followed, and how frequently we revisit them - came up for me frequently.
Among us, how many people even realize they can make different life choices than the ones handed to us early on?
I had experiences at this reunion with people who were still living from the crippling limiting beliefs most of us had as teenagers - feeling not good enough, or defective in some way - and still being paralyzed or run by it. Other friends had obviously continued to grow and make new choices in their lives. They were more present, even when life had given them some really hard issues to deal with across the years.
One particular friend comes to mind. He has lost all three of his brothers one by one across the last five years. He came over to thank us for being there and supporting him through all the memorial services. We stood together and felt the loss he carries as well as the gratitude he has for the way that we held him through it all. It was a sweet sense of deep connection in the midst of some hard years for him. But he is continuing to make life choices that work for him and growing beyond the losses.
My mom and my sister are the last of my family of origin. We also have had our share of losses of different kinds. Yet, we have continued to grow and hold our relationship in a way that nourishes all of us. So it truly was a pleasure to have them here.
As I reconnected with old friends and heard about their lives, it spurred me to think about mine - about the things I am grateful for, as well as the things I need to change in order to stay current with myself. I got a reminder to look at the choices I make everyday. Are they what I need in this moment, or are they something that worked last week or last year but not now?
This heightened awareness of my choices caused me to slow down and take time with friends and family - such as a celebratory dinner with my children on the eve of my departure - when previously I would have kept my nose in my packing and not spent that time with them. Then there is the hour I spent with a dear friend that I rarely see, so that we could catch up one on one. It was delightful.
Life is just too short to let these heart-connecting times go by. That is one important choice I hope I always remember to make. I find that my life can be busy and I get sucked into the pressure of a full schedule so easily. So reaching for what feeds my heart and soul is the choice I am making.
My choices include spending time teaching and visiting friends in Vancouver, B.C. and then at Esalen Institute, in the beauty of Big Sur, CA. Catch my blog for a daily update on what has unfolded as I travel this summer, connecting with friends and making those heart connections. At Esalen Institute in Big Sur I will be leading a series of workshops ranging from women's empowerment and healing to my only residential version of the Grounding and Healthy Boundaries workshop. What are your choices today?
Warmest Regards,
