Greetings!
It's September, a time when I reflect back on the gifts of summer - the warmth of the sun - and how that energy of the element of fire feeds us. In the emotional realm, fire is synonymous with passion and love. Most people think that our emotions (particularly the heated emotions like passion and love) are something that comes upon us suddenly, out of our control or at least out of our normal planning capacity. And yet, I recently have been playing with the idea that one can cultivate a feeling of love - caring - and yes, passion, by how we see someone. Our eyes readily convey to our loved ones how we are feeling. Take a moment right now and imagine seeing someone you love dearly as they first enter your presence. Your eyes light up, your heart opens and a sense of warmth floods your being. Your beloved (mate, child, animal) can also instantly sense how you are drinking them in. This is the fire element manifesting in its purest form. If you can feel this, then that fire element cycle within you is in good shape (and keeping you healthy). May we all have such a capacity and practice it regularly. Which brings me to one of life's enigmas - one of those puzzles we can never quite get right. If it feels this good and is this easy, what keeps us from continually greeting our loved ones (and life in general) in this way - this 'drinking them into the depths of our hearts?' What keeps us from warming our heart's chambers like this on a regular basis? In a word - judgment - self-judgment and judging others. When the mind overtakes the heart and begins to judge ourselves or the other person we love - rightly or wrongly - it disrupts this flow of loving energy, this healthy circuitry of giving and receiving that we are meant to be bathed in every day. Judgment comes in many forms. We can judge ourselves or our actions as 'not good enough' - and feel ashamed or guilty - and that will stop the flow of love. We need to feel loving of ourselves for the pump of love to be primed. So when we are in self-judgment, it stops the love circuitry at the source and separates us from the heart's wonderful connections as we hide out - feeling badly deep inside. Sometimes we don't even recognize what we are feeling - we just know that we have a sense of separation from our world, alienated in some way. That sense of separation can be the red flag that guides us to look deeper inside, finding the part of ourselves that we are judging and then forgiving ourselves. (More on that in another newsletter.) Another favorite judgment habit of many people is to get stuck in being right. When I deem myself to be smarter, quicker, more right than my partner in any given moment - and therefore "in the right" about the subject at hand - it is almost impossible for the heart's wisdom to be felt or heard. So, unfortunately, even if I am correct, I have stopped the flow between us. Needing to be right and 'knowing it all' better than others is a sure way to stop a good heart connection. And yet, many people see this 'expert' side of themselves as one of their best assets, blinded to the side effects of their actions and attitudes. So we know that when we are falling in love, or having a new baby or a kitten or puppy, it is easy to feel this "drinking in the beloved" feeling. Judgment melts away. The real work is sustaining that feeling across the years, as events and life bear down upon us. I see this process of sustained love over time, as being one of creating a new habit - the habit of drinking in our partner/child/pet with the energy of love every day. It is easy to fall into the habit of judging. That comes with no effort! The mind naturally judges our world, categorizing things and trying to manage our daily existence. But to truly enjoy what you have been given, it really helps to cultivate a new habit of what I call "drinking in life with the eyes of love". What do we do when our beloveds have done something that is frustrating, contrary or just downright mean? How do we find our way back from this kind of circumstance? There are many paths back, depending on the issue, but a simple one that I like to practice is to drop down, under the issue at hand, and extend love to them at a soul level, bypassing the personality and their actions, and silently extending forgiveness. The forgiveness is ultimately for us, not them, because when we forgive, it frees us to come back into that heart connection that is so nurturing. (More on this in a future newsletter, too!) So take a moment now, think about your closest connections in life and in your mind's eye, 'drink them in' with love. How does it feel? What gets in your way, if anything? Can you let it go - extending forgiveness to yourself or the other? Allow yourself to return to the full circuitry of this love cycle as best you can in this moment. It will feed your heart as well as your relationships each and every day.
Warmest Regards,
