Greetings!In
this time of deepening winter - with record breaking December snow on the ground here - I find
myself naturally drawn inward even as the holiday season pulls me out to attend
numerous events with family and friends.
I know that when I am in balance
between inner and outer focus, this time of year goes much better for me. I am
much happier and I feel more of the joy that this season can hold.
So
how can we create this balance? The first step is awareness. This awareness is
what reminds us that our inner needs are just as important as our outer
creative expressions and responsibilities. This awareness signals us as to
where we are in that constant balancing process - between our inner and outer
life.
The
second step is slowing down enough to be able to hear that quiet voice of
wisdom within. The one that tells us to take a nap when we are tired rather
than pushing on through the task we are so bent upon finishing. It's the one
that whispers to us to express our gratitude every day for what we have, or to
reach out and help someone in need simply because we can. It is the voice of
the heart that leads us to what is deeply inspiring for us, rather than just
our habit.
The
third step is creating time in our schedule for this slowing down - inner
listening process. This requires healthy boundaries. Can you say "no" to what
really isn't in your best interest, even if others expect it of you? Can you
put your care for yourself on your own "to do" list? I don't know about you,
but I am a much happier, less irritable person when I get enough rest and
rejuvenation time everyday.
So
here I am, contemplating my upcoming Christmas holiday, with a sense of quiet
anticipation. I am setting aside time throughout the month of December to
tend to what helps me stay inspired and renewed, while letting go of what does
not.
Take
a moment now and reflect on what will do that for you. And then enjoy the natural pull inward that
occurs with the shorter days and colder weather.
Happy Holidays!
