In the LoupeASDA Externs are Swept Away by the Windy City

By Lia Kalliath and Megan Guthman, Alabama '14, Chicago administrative externs

We were fortunate to spend four weeks this summer working at ASDA's central office in Chicago. Coming from Birmingham, Ala., we were unaccustomed to Chicago's "L" train, revolving doors and Midwestern accents. Luckily, we felt right at home in the big bustling city! Each morning, we left our dorm at the Art Institute of Chicago and strolled down the Magnificent Mile to the American Dental Association Building (ASDA is on the seventh floor). Rotating through each department in ASDA's central office gave us a behind-the-scenes view of what ASDA's staff does on a daily basis.

Want to know the types of things Chicago externs do?

  • We helped the membership team create a contact list of predental advisors at more than 200 universities.
  • We created supporting materials for the National Leadership Conference in November.
  • We met with many of the specialty associations that are headquartered in Chicago.
  • We got to know members of the ADA's New Dentist Committee and sat in on an ADA Council on Membership meeting.
  • We wrote an article for ASDA News, blogged for Mouthing Off and even made a YouTube video!
Why an externship?

Our favorite aspect of the externship was providing feedback on issues from the student's perspective and seeing this feedback put into action. We loved thinking of ways to make current resources even better.

We're both very thankful for such a refreshing and eye-opening experience. In dental school, it is easy to get stuck in the day-to-day and lose sight of the big picture. The externship renewed our passion for dentistry and our excitement about our future careers.

We recommend the Chicago externship to any ASDA members who are eager to learn, share their ideas and bring back some "ASDA Fever" to their school. The externship was an incredible summer experience we'll cherish for a lifetime.

What made you pursue a career in dentistry?

I became interested in dentistry as a child. Coming from a family of 10 children I was always curious as to why some of us had crooked teeth and some had straight teeth. Later, the ability to transform a smile and a life made a significant impact on my interest in the field.

Find a Mentor at the National Leadership Conference

National Leadership Conference

The  National Leadership Conference is different than annual session because:

  • Content is focused on building leadership skills rather than creating association policy
  • Sessions provide personal development in areas that are critical to being a well-rounded dentist (people management, public speaking and presenting, personal finance, practice negotiations and mentoring)

There will be dedicated time to learn about ASDA and key issues in dentistry and to network with other dental students. It's never too soon to find a mentor! Below, Dr. Mike Meru, ASDA past president and NLC planning committee member, talks about how you can find your mentor at NLC. If you aren't registered, talk to your chapter delegates about attending.
