Aug. 1 Deadline for Chapter Award

The ASDA/Crest Oral-B Community Dentistry Awards will be presented to ASDA chapters for their excellence in designing and implementing oral health programs with groups that lack access to oral health education and dental care. Cash prizes in the amounts of $700, $500 and $300 will be given to chapters for first, second and third place at ASDA's 2013 Annual Session in Atlanta. In addition, each district that has 100 percent of their chapters participating in this program will receive $500 towards district activities.

Chapters will receive $100 in grant money to purchase supplies for their events. In order to earn the grant money, they must hold two outreach events before Dec. 31, 2012. Chapters must submit an intent form by Aug. 1 as well as a report of their program by Jan. 31. The intent form is available here. If you have any questions, contact Erin Kato, membership administrator, at Erin@ASDAnet.org.

Encourage Members to Apply for the
Ryan Turner Memorial Scholarship
Ryan Turner was a fourth year dental student at the University of Michigan and a former board member when he passed away suddenly in 2007. Ryan was passionate about dentistry and was a devoted member of ASDA since his first year of dental school. ASDA remembers Ryan Turner and his dedication to organized dentistry through an annual memorial scholarship in his honor. Each year, one ASDA predoctoral member is selected by the board of trustees to receive $1,000, along with $500 for his or her chapter. Application and other documents are due by Sept. 10, 2012. Read more here.
Note: national leaders are not eligible to apply.

As of July 13, 35 chapters have registered for the National Leadership Conference. There are more than 265 students already signed up and we hope to have each school represented! If you missed the early bird deadline, you can still register by Sept. 21. For FAQs, an agenda and registration details, visit www.ASDAnet.org/NLC.

Resource of the Month: Budget Templates

As you begin to plan your events and activities for the year, you will need to determine your chapter's budget. The budget will guide the amount of revenue needed through fundraising, local dues and sponsorship to cover the costs of your activities. Use ASDA's sample budget on the chapter resources website to help.

Membership FAQs
I graduated from dental school in May. What happens with my ASDA and ADA membership?

Since ASDA's membership runs on a calendar year, you are still a predoctoral member of ASDA until Dec. 31, 2012. This means, you are still eligible for the full benefits of ASDA, including health insurance, free life and disability insurance and our publications. Be sure to update your contact information with ASDA so you can continue to receive your benefits (see below for instructions on updating your address).

ADA membership also runs on a calendar year so your student membership does not expire until Dec. 31. However, now is the time to start planning your conversion from student to active ADA membership. You have several options, depending on your next step after graduation: 1) graduate student membership if you are going into a graduate program or residency; 2) tripartite membership through your state society, if you will be an associate, starting a practice, or faculty of a dental school; 3) federal dental service membership for those going into the armed forces or becoming a federal employee; and 4) provisional membership if you have graduated but haven't started a professional career yet. All categories have reduced rates. For details, visit www.ada.org/goto/join.

How do I update my contact information?

There are three ways to update your contact information, including email address, with ASDA:

  1. Go online to www.ASDAnet.org/update-your-address.aspx and login as a member using your last name as your user name and ADA number as your password
  2. E-mail Membership@ASDAnet.org
  3. Call 800-621-8099, ext. 2795

Who should I contact with questions or concerns? Membership@ASDAnet.org
