Lessons Learned in Barcelona

By Meghan Keelean, CMP,
ASDA program manager

One month ago I was in Barcelona, soaking up the sun and beautiful weather during my 12-day European vacation. While I have been to Europe before, it was my first trip to Spain. I could definitely get used to the Spanish way of life, including starting each day with café con leche (I learned whole milk makes coffee infinitely better) and a pastry. My favorite place I visited was Gaudí's La Sagrada Familia. The construction of this cathedral is fascinating.

Began in 1882, it is still under construction and is not expected to be completed until at least 2032. If you've been there, you understand why a church would take so long to build. The architecture is unlike anything I've ever seen. I was in awe of every aspect, from the detail of the façades, the sculptures, to the beautiful stained glass and the innovative columns Gaudí designed, inspired by trees. Every detail is so intricate. It's difficult to put into words the admiration I have for him after seeing his masterpiece, though still unfinished. Gaudí was able to develop plans for the completion of the project, which are still being followed today, 86 years after his death. One day I hope to go back to Barcelona to see it finished.

Beyond taking the time to appreciate someone's ingenuity and vision, there are pieces of my vacation I hope to hold on to:

  • Enjoy a leisurely lunch - most days I spent at least an hour having lunch outdoors, enjoying the surroundings and people watching. Usually, when I'm at work, I eat my lunch at my desk. There's a very nice park across the street from the ASDA office that I need to take advantage of during the nice weather and eat lunch outside.
  • Explore new neighborhoods - obviously everything in Spain was new to me. What I love about Chicago is all the neighborhoods and the distinct feeling each one has. Barcelona also has many neighborhoods with very unique aspects to each. I've lived in Chicago for seven years, and there are still areas of the city I need to explore. Summer seems like the perfect time to do that with all the street festivals and activities!
  • Leave work at work - during my vacation, I didn't check work e-mail at all. While I knew that would make my first day back in the office a bit of a challenge, I needed time away from my regular life to decompress. I felt renewed when I came back.

While I know it isn't possible for everyone to take two weeks off and go to Europe, I encourage everyone to take a long weekend now and then and explore a new area or city, and leave your work, your dental life behind for short while. It's the best thing I've done for myself in a long time and I had an amazing experience I will never forget.
