"Dollars and Dentists" Airing on Frontline

PBS/Frontline will be running a special called "Dollars and Dentists" on Tuesday, June 26 (check your local listings for the time). This segment will examine faults in America's dental-care system such as the scarcity of dentists who accept Medicaid, which causes many poor children to go without care, individuals who turn to emergency rooms for their dental needs and how corporate dental chains fit into the system. View the preview and check your local listings here.

2012 ASDA Extern Program

Each year, ASDA selects students to serve as externs for the summer in the ASDA central office and ADA's Washington, D.C. office. The program gives interested dental students a unique opportunity to experience the workings of organized dentistry in a variety of areas, including national and state health policy legislation and association management. Applications for next year's program will open up this fall and will be due January 2013. Click here for more details.

Congratulations to Megan Guthman and Lia Kalliath, Alabama '14, who began in the ASDA central office on June 4 (pictured below). The ADA Washington, D.C. externs, Michael Copp, Minnesota '15 and Taylor Koren, Baylor '15, will start on July 9.

ADEA Virtual Fair for Predental Students

ADEA will be holding a virtual exhibit fair on June 26-27 that is free for predental students to attend. More than 1,500 predental students are expected to participate. ASDA will have a booth at this fair, along with many of the dental schools. Alex Barton, vice president, will be giving the presentation "ASDA: Membership and Leadership Opportunities for Predental Students" on June 27. Read more here.

Please share this information with predental students at your school or those predental clubs that your chapter interacts with.

Aug. 30 Deadline for ASDA's Group Exemption

Filing for group exemption with ASDA is the easiest way for chapters to obtain tax-exempt status from the federal government and to allow ASDA to file taxes on behalf of your chapter (if your chapter has $50,000 or less in annual gross receipts for any calendar year). ASDA chapters that have been granted a group tax exemption by the Internal Revenue Service do not have to pay tax on income that is related to its tax exempt purpose.

To file for group exemption, submit the following three documents to Danielle Bauer, director of membership, at by Aug. 30:

  • Chapter Affiliation Agreement signed by chapter officer
  • Consent form to be included in group exemption
  • Form SS-4 is the application for Employer Identification Number, if your chapter does not have a federal tax ID number

These forms can be found on ASDA's website here.

Chapter Banner and ASDA Logos

As you ramp up for the new membership year and start preparing for your membership drive, consider creating a chapter banner to display at your events. ASDA has created a template you can use for your banner and logos you can download to use in your print and web materials. These files can be accessed on the chapter resources website.

"Understanding Organized Dentistry" from ADA

You've probably heard seasoned dentists describe the ADA as a member-driven organization. How, exactly, do the members do the driving?

Find answers to those questions in Understanding Organized Dentistry. Learn how the resolution process transforms ideas into policy, understand the tripartite structure, identify the councils, commissions and committees that govern the ADA and much more.

Access the free PDF online at or request a hard copy by contacting ADA Office of Student Affairs at or 312-440-7470.

Crest Oral-B Offers Cash for Community Outreach

Crest Oral-B has added cash prizes to their yearly recognition of ASDA chapters who create and implement oral health programs. The programs will be judged for first, second and third place awards in the amounts of $700, $500 and $300. In addition, each district achieving 100 percent chapter participation will receive $500.

Chapters work with their Crest Oral-B representative to order products, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, for use in their work. A $100 grant will assist chapters in purchasing these materials. The full requirements and intention form can be viewed here. The deadline to submit your completed intention form to is Aug. 1. April2012

Do you have new chapter leaders?

Membership FAQs

I am graduating from dental school in May. What happens with my ASDA and ADA membership?

Since ASDA's membership runs on a calendar year, you are still a predoctoral member of ASDA until Dec. 31, 2012. This means, you are still eligible for the full benefits of ASDA, including health insurance, free life and disability insurance and our publications. Be sure to update your contact information with ASDA so you can continue to receive your benefits (see below for instructions on updating your address).

ADA membership also runs on a calendar year so your student membership does not expire until Dec. 31. However, now is the time to start planning your conversion from student to active ADA membership. You have several options, depending on your next step after graduation: 1) graduate student membership if you are going into a graduate program or residency; 2) tripartite membership through your state society, if you will be an associate, starting a practice, or faculty of a dental school; 3) federal dental service membership for those going into the armed forces or becoming a federal employee; and 4) provisional membership if you have graduated but haven't started a professional career yet. All categories have reduced rates. For details, visit

How do I update my contact information?

There are three ways to update your contact information, including email address, with ASDA:

  1. Go online to and login as a member using your last name as your user name and ADA number as your password
  2. E-mail
  3. Call 800-621-8099, ext. 2795

Who should I contact with questions or concerns?

Quote of the Month
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.
