The Best Week Ever

By Linda Cooper, CMP
meetings manager

Chicago has had record temperatures this month, sometimes up to 30 degrees above average. Tulips and trees are starting to bloom on Michigan Avenue, well over a month early. When I think that it has only been three weeks since Annual Session concluded and the worry that a blizzard would hinder you from arriving in Minneapolis----I can't believe it.

Staff returned to Chicago exhilarated by the third year of record-breaking attendance at Annual Session and the positive feedback from members, exhibitors, sponsors and ASDA supporters. I can't describe the thrill and feeling of satisfaction that seeing an entire year's work come to fruition brings. ASDA staff is an amazing team and our work plan introduced this year by Communications Manager Cheryl Graf, helped us perpetuate the best week ever for ASDA members.

At the event, the Council on Sessions hosted three hot topic sessions and six workshops that were all well received. Keynote speaker Mike Staver introduced leadership principles and set the tone for the meeting. The Council on Education introduced a student research poster session with 20 participants. Staff members Danielle Bauer and Kim Schneider elevated the prestige of our awards at the Gold Crown Awards ceremony----red carpet and all. Leaders from the ADA were so impressed with the production of our opening ceremonies and Gold Crown Award Ceremony that they asked for a copy of the new trailer video ASDA developed to replicate it at their annual meeting. Check out the photos from Annual Session on ASDA's Flickr account.

The most important constituent is you----ASDA members----who took the time to thank the ASDA central office staff for what we do for you and providing an experience you won't forget.

Next up is the new National Leadership Conference. Registration details will be out in May with a money-saving early bird registration offer. I look forward to greeting many of you here in Chicago on Nov. 2-4.

Hannibal Alexander "Alex" CrispSam Low, DDS, MS, MEd

Hannibal Alexander "Alex" Crisp
East Carolina  '15

Unique hobby or interest:
As an undergraduate, I played varsity football at UNC Chapel Hill. To say the least, my commitment to exercise/training has yet to relieve me of its football ways (I still work out like I'm training for the NFL combine, but I love it.)

Sam Low, DDS, MS, MEd University of Florida College of Dentistry, professor emeritus, periodontology

Words of wisdom for future dentists:

You can always read "how to"... take the high road, find the reality mentors and ask why?

New Dental School to Open in Kirksville, Mo.
On March 15, there was a ground-breaking ceremony for A.T. Still University's new dental school in Kirksville, Mo. The Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health will accept 40-45 students who will begin in fall 2013. The students will study the first two years on ATSU's Kirksville campus. They will spend their third and fourth years in community health centers across Missouri. The school is opening to address the barriers to care issues in Missouri. Missouri ranks 47th in the nation in access to dental care for all residents and 49th in the nation in access to dental care for children. Read the full story.
