The Chapter Tour

By Danielle Bauer, ASDA chapter relations manager

The majority of my time at ASDA is spent sitting behind a computer reading and responding to e-mails from chapter leaders and members. However, each fall, I am lucky enough to get out of the office and visit some of our chapters and meet our members face-to-face. Some visits are to chapters struggling with membership and our goal is to help ignite that "ASDA fever" that makes so many of our chapters strong. Other visits are to new schools to let them know how ASDA can help them through dental school.

Last month, my tour started in Utah with the new dental school at Roseman University. ASDA President Adam Shisler, Houston '12, along with Nancy Honeycutt, ASDA's executive director and I presented to 80 new students at the end of their first week of orientation. Our presentation followed lunch so I expected to see many sleepy faces, but I was pleasantly surprised to have such an engaged audience. Many students were familiar with ASDA from their predental clubs and I anticipate great leaders at this chapter.

The next stop was Las Vegas where Vice President Brittany Bensch, Washington '12, Council on Membership Chair Alex Barton, Virginia '13 and I gave a presentation to 70 first year students on their first day of orientation. The audience perked up when they learned that ADA's Annual Meeting is coming to Sin City in October and they are able to attend for free as an ASDA/ADA member. I want to commend their first delegate, Erina Hung, '12 for all of her efforts thus far to improve this chapter. I expect Las Vegas to reach Ideal Chapter status once again under her leadership!

The last stop was close to home in Downers Grove, Ill. to visit the new school at Midwestern University. Midwestern is our largest new school with 125 first year students. ASDA President Adam Shisler, Houston '12, Executive Director Nancy Honeycutt, District 7 Trustee Ben Youel, Illinois '13 and I gave a lunch time presentation followed by a full tour of the school. I live only 15 minutes from this school and never realized how large and scenic the campus is. This chapter will benefit from the relationship that the other Illinois chapters have with the Illinois State Dental Society and their ASDA dues will be funded by ISDS. With 100% membership and a supportive faculty advisor, this chapter will start off strong.

In October, we set off to Greenville, N.C. to visit the new school at Eastern Carolina University. Then in November, we end our tour with a stop at the San Antonio chapter to try and get students excited about ASDA.

After San Antonio, I go back to sitting at my desk in the central office and "meeting" members through e-mail only until the next tour begins. Connecting with our chapters is truly the best part of my job and I hope that I have the opportunity to meet you during future tours.

ASDA Takes on Buffalo
2011 ASDA Regional Meeting
Last weekend, 90 dental students from Howard to Pitt descended on Buffalo Dental School for ASDA's Eastern Regional Meeting. Here are some highlights:

  • Dean Michael Glick of the University at Buffalo welcomed attendees.
  • Dr. William Calnon, who will become president of the ADA next month, shared his view of the importance of organized dentistry. He said, "Don't wait for an invitation to get involved." Tim Calnon, Buffalo '13, already takes his father's advice - he is the ASDA District 2 trustee who helped planned the event. Dr. Calnon also encouraged attendees to find someone to be mentored by.
  • Dr. Brian Schwab, District 3 representative to the ADA New Dentist Committee (NDC), made students aware of support post-graduation support through the NDC. He expressed the importance of having business skills in order to be a well-rounded dentist.
  • Dr. Roger Triftshauser motivated the crowd when he explained how to become a leader (be caring, listen and get involved). His words of wisdom to keep your passion for dentistry and camaraderie amongst classmates alive: "You're young once, but immature forever!"

Outside of the sessions, Buffalo students showed everyone a good time with planned evening activities in their hometown. There were also some surprises along the way. During the leadership reception on Saturday night, the New England Patriots arrived in the hotel for their Sunday game with the Buffalo Bills.

It was a great event that introduced attendees to organized dentistry, the value of ASDA and to new friends from dental schools across the east coast. To see event photos, click here.

Important National Board and DAT Policy Updates and Notice about Interruption of Testing Services
The American Dental Association (ADA) and Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) are engaged in a major technology project to update the software systems that support the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) and the Dental Admission Test (DAT). These changes will impact all testing programs during the month of January 2012 and will affect application processing, DENTPIN application and retrieval, score processing and score report requests.

Some changes to the examinations include a shorter application eligibility period, time limits for retesting as a result of an appeal and information about examination irregularities may now accompany score reports.

For more information on the changes, visit the specific exam websites: NBDE Part I,  NBDE Part II, or DAT.

ASDA will be hosting a poster session at Annual Session in 2012. If you are currently doing research or have done research in the past, you are encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration by Nov. 1, 2011. For more information, click here.

ASDA has many shining stars. If you or someone you know demonstrates leadership qualities and pitches in at your chapter and around your community, apply for the Ryan Turner Memorial Scholarship. You could win $1,000 plus $500 for your chapter. All application materials are due by Nov. 1, 2011.
Participate in National Primary Care Week Oct. 10-14
ASDA is proud to support National Primary Care Week (NPCW) 2011 from Oct. 10-14. NPCW is an annual initiative organized by Primary Care Progress (PCP) and AMSA to celebrate the practice, the quality and the cause of primary care. This is an exciting opportunity for trainees, clinicians and primary care supporters from around the country to organize local activities in their primary care communities.

ASDA encourages members to participate in NPCW activities. PCP and AMSA can provide support and strategic assistance for groups planning NPCW events. Visit PCP's website  for updates on NPCW-related events and for toolkits to help design activities that will bring people together across stages of training and different fields of medicine.

For more information, contact Uyen Doan, PCP's Senior Field Organizer.

Access a list of national and state-level loan repayment programs on The ADA compiles and updates the Dental Student Loan Repayment Programs & Resources document frequently---- it's a great way to review the various options across the country.
