Collaboration with ADA Board of Trustees
An Update from Adam Shisler, President
ASDA President Adam Shisler
One of the largest honors as ASDA President is the invitation to address the ADA Board of Trustees. On April 11, I was able to speak on behalf of the Executive Committee and ASDA membership. The EC put together a list of priorities that directly affect the members of ASDA and the progression of our association.

The issue of licensure was at the forefront of the conversation and I thanked the ADA for their work in investigating new pathways via the ADA Portfolio Task Force. Also included were discussion points regarding ways the ADA could assist in the implementation of favorable lunch & learn policies. These policies would allow all schools to take advantage of the opportunity to provide a comprehensive education for all students. We are very excited to see where this initiative will progress. Lastly, the board was interested in hearing about our lobbying efforts. I informed them of the success of National Dental Student Lobby Day and the many state lobby days involving students. The ADA Board of Trustees is investigating ways to get more student involvement in ADA's lobbying efforts.

The structure of the ADA Board of Trustees is based on a four-year term for each trustee. This is drastically different from ASDA. The board was informed of the turnover that occurs each year within ASDA leadership and the initiatives that are in place to overcome the challenges it presents. A major initiative is the implementation of our strategic plan approved by the ASDA 2010-2011 Board of Trustees. The ADA leadership was extremely impressed by the forward thinking of our organization and agreed with the strategic goals of our association.

The EC is excited about the progression of our relationship with the ADA Board of Trustees and is sincerely grateful for a genuine open door policy to their association. Our collaboration with all dental organizations is imperative to the overall success of ASDA. We're committed to making all collaborative efforts beneficial and productive for ASDA members.

New Awards Program for Chapters
The new ASDA/Crest Oral-B Community Dentistry Awards will be presented to ASDA chapters for their excellence in designing and implementing programs for groups that lack access to oral health education and dental care. Certificates of recognition will be given to participating chapters and monetary awards will be presented to first, second and third place winners at ASDA's 2012 Annual Session. In addition, each District that has 100% chapters participation in this program will receive $500 towards District activities.

Chapters can receive $100 in grant money to purchase supplies for their events. In order to earn the grant money, they must hold two outreach events before December 31, 2011. Chapters must submit an intent form by August 1 as well as a report of their program by January 31.

Applications are available on ASDA's website. If you have any questions, contact Danielle Bauer, Chapter Relations Manager, at

Resolutions Adopted at 2011 House of Delegates
At the 2011 Annual Session, the House of Delegates considered nine resolutions on topics such as dental outreach programs, defining access to care, recycling and marketing of anti-caries products. The House approved an updated set of bylaws for the association, which includes changes in our membership structure beginning January 2012.

New Chapter Leadership ---- Update Your Records
This time of year, many chapters start electing new officers for the year. Please share these changes with the central office so you receive important updates for your chapter. Send the names and email addresses for your new leaders to Danielle Bauer, Chapter Relations Manager.
ADA Insurance Deadline for Seniors ----  May 1
May 1 is an important deadline for seniors regarding ADA life and disability insurance. ADA coverage can be continued beyond graduation ----  it even remains free for grads through the end of 2011, and longer for residents who choose to stay in the student program. But seniors must take action by May 1 to maximize their post-graduation options.

Urge seniors to visit  by May 1 to declare their career plans and learn about the conversion process (options and timelines vary by career path). May 1 is also the last day for any senior to sign up for ADA student insurance, which provides instant debt protection and practice loan collateral for new dentists.

And, for any upcoming senior sendoff events on your campus, consider handouts and giveaways from ADA Insurance Plans. Contact Leslie Franklin for details.
2011 Membership Update
As of April 12, 2011, 17,140 predoctoral, 623 predental, 61 associate and 16 international members have joined for the 2011 membership year. If you would like a list of your chapter's current members, please go to the website and click on "Membership Directory" under the Member Resources tab. You can select your chapter's name and it will bring up an up-to-date list of members. You are able to download the members (including their names, email, graduation year, and ADA #) into an Excel spreadsheet.
Changing Addresses? Let Us Know!
As summer approaches, many students, especially seniors, will be moving. Because publication labels are pulled in advance and third-class bulk mail is not forwarded, it is imperative to notify the central office of new addresses as soon as possible. Remind members that ASDA News is not published in June and July. To change your address, go online, email, or call (800) 621-8099, ext. 2795.
2011 Membership: FAQs
I am graduating from dental school in May. What happens with my ASDA and ADA membership?
Since ASDA's membership runs on a calendar year, you are still a predoctoral member of ASDA until December 31, 2011. This means, you are still eligible for the full benefits of ASDA, including health insurance, free life and disability insurance, and our publications. Be sure to update your contact information with ASDA so you can continue to receive your benefits (see below for instructions on updating your address).

ADA membership also runs on a calendar year so your student membership does not expire until December 31. However, now is the time to start planning your conversion from student to active ADA membership. You have several options, depending on your next step after graduation: 1) graduate student membership if you are going into a graduate program or residency; 2) tripartite membership through your state society, if you will be an associate, starting a practice, or faculty of a dental school; 3) federal dental service membership for those going into the armed forces or becoming a federal employee; and 4) provisional membership if you have graduated but haven't started a professional career yet. All categories have reduced rates. For details, click here.
