ASDA Publications ---- Cheaper than The New York Times

By Kim Schneider,
Communications Editor

Each morning, I start my day with a cup of coffee and The New York Times online. Before I log into ASDA's blog or Facebook page, I read the headlines. The Times has been my homepage for quite some time and it's my go-to place for news but I also love the magazine articles. This is one place where several of my heroes congregate (usually in the opinion and food sections). This past Monday, converted to a paid subscription platform.

While you can still read 20 articles a month for free and all front-page headlines will be accessible, it's a big step for the iconic media giant and a huge adjustment for readers. I fully support the Times in this decision and it's likely I'll start supporting them with my wallet as well. If you prefer to consume your news online, rest assured that you can still access quality dental news for free. Look no further than ASDA's national publications, ASDA News and Mouth, are both online and free to members and non-members alike. Not only that, we've rolled out a new web platform that allows ease of reading right in your web browser. (Click here to access the digimag publication.) If you're a member, you'll still receive your hard copy of ASDA News and Mouth to carry to and from class or coffee shops. Use these online publications as a recruiting tool at your school. Encourage non-members to read up on the latest news and they're sure to catch ASDA Fever.

ASDA's blog, mouthing off, is also free for everyone. Dental students, ASDA leaders and staff post to the blog at least 3 times a week. From chapter efforts to ASDA's national meetings (such as the 2011 Annual Session) and dental news, mouthing off covers everything of interest to a dental student. Subscribe to mouthing off via email or RSS feed and you'll never miss a video, photo or news bite again.

Of course, Paul Krugman doesn't write for ASDA News, but we have our own list of dental superstars. Take Dr. Jeffrey Dalin ---- he co-founded the Give Kids a Smile program and is writing a bi-monthly column in ASDA News where he shares his insight in dental practice. ASDA has a lot of exciting ideas for the national publications and we're always open to your thoughts as well (click here to submit an article or idea). We take a lot of pride in the quality of information that we provide members and on top of that, we're cheaper than the New York Times.

Dr. Dugoni Presented First-ever ASDA Paragon Award
Dr. Dugoni receives Paragon Award
ASDA presented Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, dean emeritus, professor of orthodontic and senior executive of development, University of Pacific Dental School, the Association's highest honor at the ASDA Annual Session on March 3 in Anaheim, California. The ASDA Paragon Award recognizes excellence in advocacy on behalf of students, clinical practice, contributions to the lives of dental students, innovations in progressing dental education and dedication to organized dentistry.

As a guest speaker at many ASDA national meetings, and continuous supporter of programs that build future leaders within organized dentistry, many students have experienced first-hand Dugoni's passion. "One of his famous quotes is 'at Pacific we build people, and along the way they become doctors,'" said Naomi Sever, University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio '11, ASDA 2010-2011 vice president. "He's a model of excellence and wonderful mentor ... the type of person we aspire to become."

The Paragon Award is not his first professional citation. Dugoni was elected to the prestigious FDI World Dental Federation List of Honour in 1998, which is limited to 30 individuals worldwide, and has been named Dental Alumnus of the Year by four universities: Gonzaga University, University of Washington, University of San Francisco and University of the Pacific. In 2004, he became the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in his honor while holding the position of dean.
ASDA's 41st Annual Session has Second Straight Year of Record Attendance
ASDA kicked off its 2011 Annual Session March 2 at the Disneyland Hotel. Opening Ceremonies featured many special guests including representatives from the California Dental Association, all four of the area dental schools and Dr. William Calnon, president-elect of the American Dental Association. The grand finale at the beginning of the Welcome Reception was the introduction of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Everyone, including ASDA staff, had the opportunity to have their photo taken with one or both of these very special guests. The Welcome Reception was enhanced by the special sponsorship support of the four area dental schools: Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC; Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, UCLA School of Dentistry, and Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine whose support made the extended reception and our celebrity guests possible.

The opening of the House of Delegates Thursday morning included the inaugural presentation of the Paragon Award, as well as a Keynote speech by the Disney Institute on Leadership Excellence. The day concluded with an Exhibit Fair featuring 70 companies. Over the first two days of the meeting ten sponsored breakouts were held. A big thank you to all exhibitors and sponsors.

Friday afternoon featured a prestigious panel in the Hot Topics Super Session "License to Drill." Panelists discussed the groundbreaking changes made in Minnesota and California about the very hot licensure topic of non-patient based licensure. Representatives from each state had a very interesting story to tell about how they came to their own model.

ASDA's Annual Awards were presented throughout the meeting and the event concluded with the election of the 2011-12 officers and the President's Dinner Dance which featured ASDA's first ever karaoke/talent contest.
