How ASDA Can Help You Become A Pro

 By Barton Lewin,

February is one of my favorite months... except for the Chicago weather. There are three major events that occur in February, which I never miss: the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, and the NBA All-Star game. Each event brings together the cream of the crop of their respective fields. Few things are as enjoyable as watching the elite display their skills.

In the near future, you will be entering your chosen profession. It's ASDA's role to help you become a leader in your field. By offering leadership training, membership services, and access to education, ASDA wants to help you become a winner in the field of dentistry.

Our student leaders work tirelessly with staff to provide information and services that best serves ASDA members and the public. We want to help make you a success, and if there are things you think we should be doing, we want to hear from you. Thank you for your continued support!

Update your Contact Information Before Taking Board Exams
Changing your name? Taking Boards soon? You must officially notify the ADA Department of Testing Services in advance so that your identification matches your DENTPIN record. Students should fax or mail a letter that provides their new and old names, along with the DENTPIN and ADA numbers and a copy of a photo ID or other legal documentation. To change an address, first update your online DENTPIN profile, then e-mail dentpin@ada.org to notify Testing Services that the change has been made. Contact Testing Services at 800-232-1694 or at education@ada.org for more information.

Plan for National Dental Student Lobby Day
Be sure to make your hotel reservations by tomorrow, Friday, February 25. Information is available here. Contact your members of Congress to make your appointments, and put them on the Appointments page so other schools can coordinate visits and everyone knows who is covered. Attend Lobby Day to:
  • Lobby for issues like National Institutes of Health funding and the Dental Emergency Responders Act
  • Hear firsthand what it's like to work on Capitol Hill
  • Network with dental students from around the country
  • Get your photo taken at the Capitol

UIC Students Honored with 2010 ADAF Tarrson Award
The ADA Foundation created the E. Bud Tarrson Access to Oral Health Care Award in 2003 to honor philanthropist Bud Tarrson, former chief executive officer and owner of the John O. Butler Company. Each year, the award recognizes one exemplary volunteer community service project developed by dental students. This year, the University of Illinois-Chicago ASDA chapter was presented the award for their work at Goldie's Place, a center to help homeless adults become self-sufficient by providing life skills, education and support. Students are not required to volunteer, but 25% of UIC's fourth year dental students volunteer their time. Since December 2008, the students have provided $60,256 worth of services, including cleanings, restorations, root canal therapy, extractions, crowns and dentures.

For more information about the Tarrson Award or other ADA Foundation programs, visit www.adafoundation.org.

News from the Joint Commission on the National Boards
The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) publishes a newsletter twice a year to provide information on Joint Commission actions and other information of interest. The recent issue (Volume 3, Number 2) is posted on the Joint Commission website. This edition covers news on the 2011 Examination Guides, tips for getting a DENTPIN™, decreasing test anxiety, ordering NBDE Part I score reports on-line, NBDHE standard setting, new items types on National Board examinations, and updates from the CIE and other "need to know" information.
