ASDA Meetings Manager Linda Cooper
In the Loupe
Looking Ahead to the 2011 Annual     Session ----- and Warmer Weather

 By Linda Cooper, Meetings Manager

This week in Chicago, it is January-wintry cold. Early this morning by the office, it was 1 degree (yes, on the thermometer ----- without wind chill). These temperatures certainly have all of us on ASDA's staff dreaming of sunshine and much warmer temperatures in Anaheim, California in just over a month. As ASDA's Meetings Manager, I am staff liaison to the Council on Sessions. The primary charge of this Council of your peers is to develop the content for Annual Session. 2011 is my fourth Annual Session at ASDA. Every year, there have been new innovations contributed by Sessions. Some of these innovations include Orientation to Annual Session for first-timers, keynote speakers from outside dentistry, more networking opportunities, and this year a Mobile App where all information on Annual Session will be available in your hand.

Why a mobile app? Several ASDA leaders used ADA's mobile app this past October in Orlando. You will have the meetings agenda, speaker's information, a map of the meeting space, exhibitor information, and will receive any changes regarding the meeting immediately. This will be available for Droid, Blackberry and iPhone users as well as for any phone with web access. Watch for the announcement of its release. Even if you're not attending Annual Session, you can keep up with events.

ASDA's national meetings provide you with the opportunity to meet dental students from around the country. Annual Session provides you with insight into the inner workings of your association, and provides you up-to-date on current events that will affect your career in dentistry. This year's Friday afternoon "Hot Topics Super Session" will give you an insight into how Minnesota and California passed groundbreaking legislation for two very different models of non-patient based licensure. Learn from those at the forefront in each state.

Yes, we are meeting at the Disneyland Hotel, just steps from the DisneylandŽ Resort Theme Park. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience Disney's original theme park. Friday evening the park is open late and ASDA has arranged for all attendees to be able to purchase specially priced tickets using the link below. You must purchase these tickets before you arrive in Anaheim. The ticket store closes at 9:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, March 1. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.disneyconventionear.com/GD2C11A

I look forward to meeting you in Anaheim.

A Change in Culture: Issues in Dental Licensure
By Arash Abolfazlian, ASDA Chair for the Council on Licensure

ASDA's Council on Licensure has been working diligently to change the culture towards dental licensure that has been marked by stagnancy. In an attempt to shift the mood of the dental culture towards non-patient based dental licensing examinations, the Council has been busy contacting and collaborating with state dental associations. The goal of our efforts is to ultimately create resolutions within these state dental associations that support non-patient based dental licensing examinations. The project is just beginning, and thus far, we have already influenced change in the Missouri Dental Association (they recently adopted a resolution in support of non-patient based dental licensing examinations).

In related news, a bill was passed in California that recognizes licensure by portfolio. The bill, AB 1524, was championed by many California dentists. Dr. Allen Felsenfeld, one of the key individuals responsible for this change, noted that the regulations of the bill are still being written, and that the opportunity for licensure by portfolio will likely be a viable option starting with the classes of 2012. Dr. Felsenfeld also noted that the three key groups involved in bringing about this change were the California dental schools, the state dental board, and the state dental association.
