Jumpstart's Read for the Record On Oct. 6, two million voices will be simultaneously reading to children and calling for an end to the country's early education achievement gap. Jumpstart's Read for the Record is an annual attempt to both raise awareness for early literacy and break reading records, and anyone can participate.
By visiting Read for the Record's website, you can take a pledge to read "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney to children on Oct. 6, and join millions of others across the country in demanding quality early education for all children. Everybody who reads the free book online will help the Pearson Foundation, through its Read for our Schools campaign , donate books to children in need - including preschoolers and kindergartners at some Los Angeles County school districts - so they can participate in the record-breaking event, too. The achievement gap between low-income children and those who are not socio-economically disadvantaged is wide, averaging about 20 percent in English proficiency. The gap gets even larger - around 30 percent - between certain demographics, according to the California Department of Education . Jumpstart hopes to break two reading records by having people read "Llama Llama Red Pajama" to children in print and online. You can read the sweet tale about a baby llama who wants his mama to your child, students, other family members, neighbors or friends. Surely, everyone knows a child who would love a fun story time and the chance to help kids just like them learn and succeed. Evelyn V.
