First 5 LA by the Numbers
When talks turn to budgets, a lot of numbers get thrown around. Billions of dollars, millions of jobs, thousands upon thousands of vital services people rely on. It can be overwhelming and confusing. With Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget calling for $1 billion from First 5 commissions statewide next year, and an additional 50 percent of our revenue in coming years, it's important that everyone understands what that means to us and, more importantly, Los Angeles County's young children and their families. First 5 LA stands to lose more than $500 million, which would make it impossible for us to keep up these kinds of numbers: - Every year, First 5 LA provides direct services to about 160,000 children and pregnant women in the county.
- First 5 LA funds 10,700 preschool slots and provides additional school readiness and health and social services to 58,000 at-risk children and their parents and caregivers.
- Nearly 3,000 children from poor working families receive Healthy Kids insurance, partially funded by First 5 LA.
- In October, First 5 LA approved up to $15 million in transitional funding for CalWORKs Stage 3 child care after the program was cut by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- First 5 LA funds 25 Family Literacy grantees that have served more than 1,400 children and 1,360 families.
- During the economic downturn, First 5 investments drew down about $50 million in federal funding to L.A. County through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act federal stimulus package, creating, among other things, more than 1,000 Head Start and Early Head Start slots. These investments are continuing.
- First 5 LA provided funding to more than 70 organizations and school districts in the County who serve children with special needs and their families. About 20,000 special needs children in L.A. County are currently receiving those services.
