Transitions and Opportunities

As many of you know, First 5 LA is embarking on a new way of doing business in L.A. County. Last month, our Board of Commissioners approved a plan to focus a concentrated amount of funding in 14 Los Angeles County communities, as well as a plan to change the environment for children and families countywide.

Over the past couple of months we have started moving forward on both our place-based and countywide efforts, using the 2009-2010 Strategic Plan Implementation Plan as a guide. If you haven't looked at the implementation plan, you can see it by clicking here.

The name of our place-based effort is Best Start, and for First 5 LA to truly give our strategic plan the best start possible, we understand that the first step is involving you, our stakeholders. If you want to become involved, but are unsure where to begin, I have outlined a few ways for you to join us as we move forward:
  • Stay informed! The Monday Morning Report features new "involvement opportunities" for consultants, reviewers and others as they arise. I hope you click on these links and follow up with us, or forward the opportunity onto those who you think would be interested.
  • New employment! To truly do our best, we need additions to our excellent staff to help shepherd this process. Click on our Employment Opportunities page to find out if any of our opportunities resonate with you or professionals you might know.
  • Know the plan! The First 5 LA website has a page dedicated solely to our strategic plan and the implementation plan. While much of this effort is about learning what communities need, we have given ourselves a roadmap that I encourage everyone who wants to get involved to become familiar with.
  • Sign up! If you are in a Best Start community (click here to see a list of the 14 communities)  go to www.beststartla.org, and sign up so we may contact you as we begin to outreach to your community.
Going through this transition, I am reminded of the popular psychology book, Who Moved My Cheese?, which outlines different reactions people have to change. Luckily I feel like the excited character -- ready for change and looking forward to the surprises around the corner. I hope these recommendations inspire you to join us as we move forward together.
