Target Communities and First 5 LA
With great excitement I am pleased to announce that First 5 LA has officially adopted a place-based approach to funding in Los Angeles County. Moving forward First 5 LA's Commission will target a significant portion of our funding in 14 high-need communities in an attempt to make a lasting positive difference in the lives of children and families.
And while last Thursday's Commission approval of the portfolio of communities brings to a close a long and involved process of intense research and decision-making, I am confident that it will serve as a strong springboard for a new and exciting chapter in the life of this organization and for L.A. County residents, especially children.
Place-based approaches are as old as the founding of this country. Neighbors and friends banding together to create social change is what America is based on. But for many years there was a schism between what was considered philanthropic support for causes and grassroots organizing -- or in other words a top-down versus bottom-up approach to social change.
Within the last few decades however, the two poles have come closer together, and funders have developed a deep respect for the wisdom that communities possess about themselves and their own needs and assets. Funders have started to give the needed tools to bodies of people who have themselves decided what they need to make their children whole.
First 5 LA shares in respecting the wisdom of L.A. County's residents. So it is with this respect in mind that I and my staff will approach partnership with leaders, parents, the business community and any others who wish to join in to make their neighborhood the best place for children.
