Let's Move!

Last week First Lady Michelle Obama and the President's Childhood Obesity Task Force released an extensive plan to combat the growing childhood obesity epidemic in the United States. The president has yet to approve the plan, but I am very encouraged at how extensive it is and hope to see it in action.

I am especially pleased to see an entire chapter focused on early childhood, which even targets women of child-bearing age. The first recommendation in the report reads, "Pregnant women and women planning a pregnancy should be informed of the importance of conceiving at a healthy weight and having a healthy weight gain during pregnancy, based on the relevant recommendations of the Institute of Medicine."

I encourage all of our readers to watch the press conference unveiling the plan -- click here to watch the press conference -- and to read the first chapter of the report focusing on early childhood. Click here to go to this chapter of the report. The success of this plan lies with professionals like you and me. So let's begin by becoming familiar with it. Happy reading!
