Favorite Books of First 5 LA Staff's Children

One of my favorite observances is children's book week, which starts today. And it's made me think of all of the First 5 LA babies and toddlers we have welcomed in the last few years -- just in the last couple of months we have welcomed five newborns of First 5 LA staff members! Wondering which books our staff members are reading to their kids, I took an informal poll and thought I'd share some of the fun titles they shared with me.

What mommies are reading the newbies:
  • Moo, Baa, La La La, by Sandra Boynton.
"This book is short and he absolutely LOVES when we make the animal noises -- we get the most amazing smiles and giggles," said new mommy Artineh Samkian in our Research and Evaluation Department.

For the toddlers:
  • Book! Book! Book!, by Deborah Bruss.
"This is a fun story that makes my 3-year-old excited to visit the library. It's about a group of bored farm animals that attempt, one-by-one, to check out books from the library. My daughter thinks nothing is funnier than a chicken trying to talk to a librarian," said Deliah De La Garza-Adkins in our Grants Management Department.
  • Pablo's Christmas, by Hugo C. Martin. How a poor boy with a broom saves Christmas.
  • The Complete Adventures of Curious George, H. A. Rey.
"We have read these books so many times that all I have to say is, 'this is George,' and my daughter will respond, 'he was a good little monkey and always very curious!'" says Jennifer Chheang in the Planning and Development Department.

Those entering into kindergarten are reading:
  • 365 Penguins, Jean-Luc Fromental. An oversize picture book that integrates math concepts and environmental concerns.
  • Ruby's Wish, by Shirin Yim and Sophie Blackall. A book that takes the reader back to turn-of-the-century China and teaches lessons about perseverance and self-belief.
  • Who Put the B in Ballyhoo, by Carlyn Beccia. A mixed-media digital art book paying tribute to the circus.

They are getting so big! Books our older kids are reading:
  • Indian in the Cupboard, but Lynne Beid Banks.
"My son loves this book! Watch out about for the part about scalping and be prepared for questions about what it means to be blood brothers though. The underlying message about tolerance and mutual respect is lovely." said Barbara Andrade DuBransky, in the Planning and Development Department.
  • Books by Kate DiCamillo, i.e. Tales of Despereaux, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Because of Winn Dixie, The Magician's Elephant and Tiger Rising.
"Kate DiCamillo is our favorite writer -- all her books are great! She pulls at your heart strings; tear-jerking messages of love and missed love," said Letticia Arriola, in our Executive Department, and mother of three little ones.
