Evie's Desk: 2010 Week of the Young Child
Yesterday marked the first day of the 2010 Week of the Young Child, an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association. First 5 LA would like to join NAEYC in encouraging all citizens to use this week to focus on how we can better meet the needs of all young children and their families.
NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life. This year's theme is "The Early Years Are Learning Years," emphasizing the importance of early childhood education in the lives of children.
If you would like to celebrate, First 5 LA's investment in preschool, Los Angeles Universal Preschool(LAUP), will be hosting events throughout the week and month including the following:
- "Dream Big" Art Exhibit at the Bridge at L.A. City Hall (April 5-30): For the month of April, LAUP preschoolers in the City of Los Angeles will have their artwork featured at the Bridge in City Hall. The theme of the artwork is "Dream Big: what do you want to be when you grow up." Check out the 2009 Week of the Young Child Artwork Gallery here.
- Open House!: LAUP preschool providers all around L.A. County will be hosting open houses during the Week of the Young Child. Click here to view a complete listing of preschools hosting Open Houses in your community.
For further event information, contact Ayda Safaei at (213) 416-1312 or asafaei@laup.net.
