First 5 LA Continues to Celebrate Child Literacy Month
For our third annual child literacy month campaign, Read Early, Read Aloud! First 5 LA has promoted early literacy and library card registration throughout the county beginning November 1. Kicking-off the campaign, we hosted a "Red Carpet Affair" at the Julian Dixon Library on Nov. 5, providing top hats and boas to more than 100 children who strode down a red carpet to the library, where they engaged in a variety of literacy activities.
On Saturday Nov. 7, First 5 LA staff joined nonprofit Friends of the Family for the sixth annual Festival of Readers. Held at Maclay Middle School in Pacoima, the festival welcomed more than 700 participants from all over the San Fernando Valley. With a focus on the joys of reading, the festival also offered crafts and entertainment including the group "We Tell Stories" and popular children's signer Jose Luis Oroszco.

Last week, First 5 LA Commissioner Angie Stockwell spoke at the kick-off for the Million Word Challenge, an annual event hosted by Families in Schools, challenging students to read a million words or more in the next six months. Among those also speaking at the kick-off was Los Angeles City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Superintendent of Schools for the Los Angeles County Office of Education Darline Robles, and Sylvia Lopez from KCAL 9. First 5 LA is a partner in the Million Word Challenge and encourage schools to participate.
I encourage all of our readers to go to our Ready. Set. Grow! Web site at www.readysetgrowla.org to learn more about the 'Read Early, Read Aloud' campaign and the library card promotion.
