A New Direction - First 5 LA's Strategic Plan
As many of you no doubt already know, First 5 LA is planning a fundamental shift in how we operate in Los Angeles County. After reflecting on the last 10 years of grantmaking and careful deliberation on how to move forward with future investments, our Commission has adopted a place-based approach to supporting children and families. Focusing our resources on making the places in which children and families live more nurturing and safe, we hope to accomplish four key outcomes: children are born healthy; children maintain a healthy weight; children are safe from abuse and neglect; and children are ready for kindergarten.
The thought and public deliberation that has gone into this shift has taken the better part of a year, and follows what we know and research confirms: that community has a crucial impact on the healthy development of children. Through a place-based approach, we can direct our grantmaking and supportive services to meet the needs of children and families based on their community's needs. We can also fund in a way that focuses on changing communities into places where children and families thrive. First 5 LA will continue to fund some activities that support our efforts to impact all children in L.A. County.
Many benefits come with targeting resources to specific places, and I encourage all of our readers to read today's Monday Morning Report Strategic Plan article on the Community Selection Principles to get an idea of how some of our investments will be guided. I also invite you to participate in the process by completing a brief survey highlighting what community strengths and capacities you find important. Click here to take the survey. Please note that the survey will be closed October 30. You can also use the comments section on our Web site to post questions, opinions and suggestions on an ongoing basis as we move forward. I am very excited about this new direction and look forward to your ongoing participation.
