The Feria Deja Huella...Educaté

The California State Department of Education revealed last year that one out of every three L.A. Unified School District students drops out of school. This statistic shocked and discouraged many of us. Responding proactively, Univision KMEX 34, Telefutura 46, First 5 LA and other partners planned a county-wide event aimed at reducing the Latino dropout rate and promoting a college-bound culture.

The Feria Deja Huella took place last Saturday on the campus of Cal State University Dominguez Hills and was a huge success. Welcoming an estimated 20,000 mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles and children, the free event was geared toward caregivers who only speak Spanish and have limited experience with the U.S. educational system. Parents were guided through the system, starting with pre-K, kindergarten, elementary, middle, high school and then college.

The main message of the event was "finish high school and earn $1 million during your lifetime, go to college and earn several million dollars during your lifetime."

The Feria exposed parents to the many area resources available to support them during their child's educational journey, and included reading gardens, science activities and mentors. A donation of 25,000 books by the Molina Foundation and Mexican Consulate were given away at the event. Vision and dental screenings and an immunization station were also available, emphasizing the importance of health in a child's academic success.

I want to thank the partners and staff who helped produce this very popular event, and encourage our readers to click here to view the event photo gallery.
