Swine Flu

Given the widespread media coverage of the recent outbreak of swine flu, many L.A. County parents are understandably scared - especially since children are among the most vulnerable when it comes to getting sick from viruses. President Barack Obama has said parents should be concerned, but please do not panic. It's also important to take precautionary steps to guard against the flu.

Parents and children can work to protect themselves from any kind of flu, and I have listed below a few tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how to help stop the spread of a virus. I also encourage you to click here to listen to an NPR clip on how to prevent the virus from spreading.

Everyday actions people can take to stay healthy:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Avoid close contact with sick people:

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
