Read Across America

Last month, schools and agencies across the country celebrated the National Education Association's "Read Across America."  Beginning in 1998, this annual event was organized to coincide with the birthday of Theodor Geisel, otherwise known as the famous children's author Dr. Seuss. The spirit of the event is to celebrate reading, emphasizing that reading is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong success.

I'd like to share a poem created to commemorate Read Across America, and encourage anyone who works with families to get involved in the annual event. I'd also like to share pictures sent to me by 15th Street Family Literacy Harbor Community Adult School, a First 5 LA grantee which held its own event to celebrate the day. Read Across America Poem

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.

I'll read to myself,
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.

I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.

Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.

So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.
