The Secret's of State Dependent Training
GavelWe know in an economy where budget cuts have reduced training hours, ammunition and manpower, you probably feel as frustrated as we are.  The rate of officer deaths is on the rise.  According to  PoliceOne.com, over 30 officers have been killed in gun battles since the beginning of 2010 and the number of officers being gunned down increases every week.  We can't bring back our fallen hero's but we can give our officers working the streets the ability to turn the tables on the criminals and fight back with deadly accuracy. The key as trainers is not to give up and train smarter.  We must continue to seek out new ways to accelerate the learning process and shoot more accurately so we can do more with less and assure that the training time we do have makes a difference and saves lives.  In the following article we will provide insight as to how you can get anyone shooting with precision accuracy in less than an hour's time and assure that your officer's accuracy will transfer to the street.
 
It's been proven that a student's ability to learn and recall information will be dependent on their emotional state, which can be developed and integrated into the learning experience.  This process can be facilitated by us as instructors.  You have a golden opportunity to help your officers learn how to control their emotional state in your firearms training program which will transform their accuracy into precision shots on demand.  First it is important to realize that it is the student's emotional state at the time of learning that predetermines whether the information is understood, integrated and retained.  Psychologists have found that if you learn a skill in a parasympathetic state (a relaxed state), you will most probably have to be in a parasympathetic state to easily recall it.
 
This has several implications and creates several problems for us as firearms instructors.  As you know, most new students are unfamiliar with firearms and many seasoned officers still can't hit the broadside of a barn.  Often times when they are required to shoot they become very self conscious and fearful of not being able to perform well.  This uncertainty creates a sympathetic response. (fight, flight or state of paralysis)  Under a sympathetic response the mid-brain hijacks the forebrain which is responsible for cognitive processing.  This will limit their ability to process and recall information and it will impede their ability to shoot accurately.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW LEARNING TAKES PLACE
For our officers to understand the fundamental principles of marksmanship, their forebrain and both hemispheres of their brain must be fully engaged for maximum learning to take place.  This means they must learn the basic foundations of marksmanship in a parasympathetic state (relaxed state) for maximum understanding and integration.  All the elements of marksmanship can be presented in the classroom.
 
Now that they understand the principles of marksmanship at the conscious level, we expose the officer to the process of shooting the firearm on the range.  Once again, fear and anxiety creep in which creates the sympathetic response.  This causes the information that was previously taught in the classroom to be difficult to assess and the accuracy produced by the officer on the range is most often less than desirable.  If the student fails, this creates the belief that the shooting process is difficult and they don't have the ability to do well.  This failure creates frustration on both the part of the officer and the instructor.  We don't know about you, but we take it real personally when one of our students fails to shoot with anything less than a 1-hole group at 15 feet and a maximum of a 3 inch group at 30 feet.  We feel that we failed that student, and we take FULL responsibility for our student's success.
 
Before we understood the principles of state dependent learning, we'd be flabbergasted at how a student could forget a full block of instruction on "safety and marksmanship" in less time than it would take to walk 20 feet from the classroom into the range.  It was like they were never in the class. Their behavior had changed because their emotional state had changed.  It wasn't until we learned how to guide the student's consciousness into a resourceful state; similar to what they were experiencing during the classroom instruction (a parasympathetic state / relaxed state) that they could recall the information we previously covered and begin the next step in the learning process.
 
We've learned that whenever a student experiences a shift into a negative state, there is the potential that the information they learned previously will become difficult to recall.  We're sure you can relate to a time when you were taking a test in school and couldn't remember the answer to a question until you left the classroom.  Once the pressure was off and you returned to a similar state in which you studied, the answer then popped into your head.
 
Guiding the student's emotional state is a "double edged" sword.  Researchers have found that "emotion" is a critical element required to recall information or a specific memory.  They have found that our emotions and long term memory are stored in the same area of the brain.  If you think back to your childhood, we guarantee that there is a strong emotion attached to each memory.  So, if emotions are the key to accessing our experiences and memories, that means they can also become a barrier to recalling information.  How do we properly utilize emotions in a training environment to assist our student's in achieving peak performance starting with the very first shot?
 
Three things became extremely evident. (1) The foundation of marksmanship must be presented in a relaxed environment that utilizes a multi-sensory enriched learning experience (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) and includes a lot of positive emotions that assist in integrating the information.  This stimulates parallel processing so both hemispheres of the brain are engaged in the learning process.  (2) The students must be taught how to control their emotional state and how to "Anchor" the process.  (Anchoring is a process that will trigger a specific emotional state.) These anchors must piggyback each other so that as the situation escalates, the required resourceful states naturally transition so that peak performance can occur. 
(3) Learning has to take place so that cognitive dissonance (perception of stress) occurs in progressive steps and in a gradual manner.  This requires segmented exposures to the environment and situations that have the potential to induce the type of emotions and stress that the student will face on the street.

THE POWER OF STATE MANAGEMENT
The key component to a successful firearms training program is in teaching your student how to use their mind to manage their emotional state.  "State Management" is the key to learning, behavior, and change.  We at Insight Firearms Training Development integrate a block of instruction on "State Management" as part of the fundamentals of marksmanship and embed anchors (unconscious triggers) into the teaching process.  This will assist you in instantly creating a resourceful state for the student when he steps out onto the range.
 
The key to state management is in how you guide your students in the way that they neuro-code their experiences.  You can guide them in "what to think about" however, it is the way they neuro-code those experiences and how they represent those experiences in terms of behavior that will determine their reaction to gunfire or a threat on the street. 
 
You can assist your student to manage their emotions by teaching them how their physiology, self-talk (their internal dialogue) and what they focus on will influence their emotional state.  It is their physiology, self talk and focus that neuro-codes their experiences and these 3 key elements can provide them with the tools to control their emotions.  If their physiology, self talk or focus are out of control, their emotions will be out of control and their accuracy will be out of control.

CEMENTING THE SKILLS TO THE UNCONSCIOUS
An "anchor" is something that holds something else in place.  It can be used as a trigger to gain access to information or a resourceful emotional state.  It is created first by stimulating a powerful emotion, then at the peak of the emotion you "set" the trigger for the anchor (behavior or resourceful emotional state).  The trigger can be a special sound or word, a touch or movement, a visual contextual cue or an internal picture the student creates in their mind.  Anchors can be designed to be self induced or created by an external stimuli.  By setting a resourceful series of anchors you can open the gate of the student's mind to the information you presented in the classroom and collapse the negative state normally associated with the fear of the shooting process.  Your student's will always perform better in a positive state than they will in a negative state.


Example of an Anchor: Remember when you were a child and you got into trouble (a high emotional state) and your mother gave you that "LOOK".  From that point on, every time your mother gave you that "LOOK" you'd get a knot in your stomach.  That "LOOK" is an anchor that triggers a negative emotional state within you.  That "LOOK" probably became generalized, so whenever anyone else gives you that "LOOK" it will create an association of the facial expression to the conditioned response which represents itself as a negative feeling or state.
 
We can utilize this same principle to create positive states within our students and anchor these resourceful states into the shooting process.  We can then generalize these states into any context that requires a precision shot.
 
Because the dynamics of the learning experience change due to the firing process of the gun or the situation, you can reinforce the original anchor of "empowerment" on the range immediately before firing the pistol.  Creating the state of "empowerment" should be the first step of the pre-shot routine.   (A pre-shot routine is a syntax of pictures, sounds or feelings of performing a skill perfectly.) We piggyback the anchor and emotion of "Empowerment" to the anchor and the lack of emotions to the state of "DETACHMENT" so when the shooter engages into the process of shooting they become void of emotions.

Example: When the student fixates on the spot he envisions the bullet to impact on the target he achieves "Sight Picture".  We teach him to feel the sense of empowerment and confidence that "The Bullet Is Going To Go Right There!"  As the shooter transitions his focus from the target back to the front sight for achieving sight alignment, we program a transformation into the state of "detachment".   We have him disassociate from the target (i.e. the threat/problem) and begin transitioning his focus to the solution which is the GIP on his front sight.  (For more information on the GIP, review our most recent article published in the IALEFI Magazine Issue #48,  "Insight To The Front Sight")  CLICK HERE To Review the Article. This provides the shooter the ability to produce "Instant Accuracy" starting with their very first shots and precision accuracy will continue from that point on.  This empowers the student with the belief that "I can do it!" 

 
Whenever a student shoots a perfect shot, we "anchor" the resourceful state that was responsible for the student's success, i.e. the state of "detachment", and piggy back that anchor onto the next shot or exercise with the expectation "I Can Do It!"
 
By stacking the anchors of empowerment and detachment we can create the condition for peak performance.  This way, anytime the student wants to achieve peak performance, they can fire off the anchor for empowerment and the anchor of detachment will naturally follow with the anchor of confidence and the belief of "I Can Do It!"  This will generate peak performance on demand and will easily generalize into any context much like the "LOOK" did when you were a child, but in a resourceful way.

THE STRUCTURE OF SUCCESS
The next step is to push the envelope utilizing a progressive methodology.  To create a successful learning experience we want to structure the exercises so the skill becomes generalized into any context.  We facilitate this by progressively increasing the difficulty of the exercise while reinforcing the required state and behavior to achieve peak performance.
 
In using this methodology we have found that the student will "instantly" begin shooting one-hole groups at 15 feet.  As we gradually increase the distance or the difficulty of the shot, we have the student fire-off the "anchor" to produce the required state for peak performance.  We then have them utilize their mind and physiology by running through a pre-shot routine.  (Remembering what it looked like, and remembering what it felt like to shoot that perfect shot.)  In the first hour you can have the student shooting consistent 3 inch groups at 30 feet using less than 50 rounds of ammunition.  (Bonus: This will save your department big bucks in reducing their ammunition usage :) This process will be reinforced while adding the draw and additional manipulation skills. (malfunction clearance drills, tactical reloads, use of cover, etc.)
 
We reinforce the process using a pre-shot routine to maximize the "I Can Do It!" attitude which produces a resourceful state and maximizes performance.  By the middle of the day, the front sight will become a stimulus for a conditioned response on the trigger.  The perception of limited time and the sense of urgency so often associated with the "spray & pray" method of delivering inaccurate fire will no longer exist.  The student will now be able to alter their perception of time rather than trying to cope with the pressures of limited time by managing their state which will produce precision accuracy. 
 
Finally, we integrate the "contextual cues" for Shoot / Don't Shoot.  The cues (identifying the subtle nuances that occur prior to someone going for a weapon) will be piggybacked onto the existing anchors for maximum state management and the appropriate response to a potential threat.

ENGAGING THE UNKNOWN
In order to win the gunfight the student must stay in the present when faced with a potentially lethal threat.  If he allows his imagination to future project himself into a negative reality that doesn't yet exist, he will spiral into a full blown sympathetic response.  Because his performance is going to be based on state based training, we need to anchor the time of the "Present", the "NOW", into this block of instruction so the concern and fear of injury or death is outside their focus of reality and they engage the skill into the "unknown" without hesitation or error. 
 
When we train military, we actually condition the acceptance of injury or death into the learning experience so the possibility of injury or death doesn't change their state at any time.  This way, they are able to function in harms way with machine like qualities. We teach them that the only thing they have control of in their life or in battle is how they think about things, for it is the meaning they give to any situation that will determine how they are going to respond to it.
 
A way to facilitate this in actual training is to begin with an advanced psychological form of visualization and utilize a formal hypnotic induction that exposes the student to the situation before actual engagement.  The key is to have the hypnotic experience first, so you can guide the student's reality and create the conditions that support empowerment and confidence.  (Now many of you may be saying to yourselves, "Hypnotic induction; What is this, voodoo?"  Please keep an open mind.  This process really does work if you give it a chance.  If you don't give it a chance you just might miss out on one of the most valuable tools in your teaching arsenal.)  Hypnosis is nothing more than a very fixated state of focus that frees the unconscious mind to drive the behavior.  Once the student is in trance we start with the end victory of "winning the gunfight".  We structure the experience of winning the fight first.  This facilitates the confidence of having the skills before engaging in the confrontation and reduces the fear of being shot.  Since they start by experiencing success, the end result supports the fact that they are unharmed and because they've won the fight, the positive resourceful state required to take them to victory is reinforced.
 
Now that they have an expectation of how they will perform we change the time line of the hypnotic experience to the beginning of the encounter.  We then create a build-up of escalation of the threat and aggression in the officer's mind and assist them in looking for and identifying the contextual cues they need to make a shoot / don't shoot decision.  As the situation escalates and as the contextual cues unfold, we'll reinforce the resourceful states required to keep their emotions under control. 
 
We use a machine metaphor and have the student trance-form and take on the persona of a machine.  A machine is void of emotions which supports the state of "detachment".  We desire machine like performance, so we transform the student's behavior into machine like qualities to produce machine like accuracy.  The triggers to "trance-form" are based on the contextual cues, reading of body language, language patterns, and changes in the suspect's tonality and eye movements.   We'll reinforce the state of detachment by using a machine metaphor with our language: "As the suspect reaches for his wallet, your eyes "zoom" to the palms of his hands as you feel yourself trance-form and detach into a machine with your mental trigger set; "When this . . . Then this !"  Void of emotion. 
 
We want to use ..."When this"....not...."If this".  The word "if" is permissive and lacks connected engagement.  The word "when" creates expectation, keeping the officer engaged and minimizes the effects of a startle response.

TESTING THE STRENGTH OF THE CONDITIONING
One of the final phases of conditioning the process and state management skills is to use Insight's RTS (Real Time Simulator) to reinforce the discretionary skills under live fire conditions.  The officer must face a suspect projected on a screen down range.  The officer will converse and interact with the suspect in real time.  (This is not like FATS.)  This is real time interaction where both the officer and the suspect must make decisions and are able to talk and interact in "real time".  The officer will be required to utilize their state management skills, discretionary skills, and precision marksmanship skills to properly act or react based on the scenario.  We use live ammunition to replicate the realism of a gunfight.  This simulation tests the strength of the conditioning.  It provides the opportunity to reinforce the officer's behavior and response, use of tactics, and their ability to control their emotional "state" which is a key element to shooting with precision accuracy.
