News and Events:
September 2012

Greetings!

How time flies when we're having fun!  During the last few days, Fall has already been in the air in New England.  The crispness of the air and those first changes in the color of the leaves makes me excited for our 15th Annual Fall Reception.  I hope that we will see you at the Concord Country Club on Thursday, September 27th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  It will be my great pleasure to present Connie Rakowsky, Executive Director of the Legal Advice and Referral Center, with the Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award.  Connie joins an illustrious group of past winners, several of whom were on hand for the NH Campaign for Legal Services fundraising event on August 28th.  You may have seen a picture of these past Ricker Award recipients, including the Honorable Susan B. Carbon, Martha Van Oot, Mary Susan Leahy, Linda S. Johnson, Emily G. Rice, Ann McLane Kuster, Barbara Keshen, the Honorable Carol Ann Conboy, Ellen J. Musinsky, the Honorable Deborah Kane Rein, and Lucy C. Hodder in the most recent edition of the Bar News.  We are grateful to this outstanding group of professionals for their support of the Campaign's important mission.

I would be remiss if I did not thank our Board Secretary, Sabrina Beavens, for her tireless work planning this year's Reception.  Our talented Executive Director, Gretchen Pyles, has also worked hard to make this year's Reception every bit as fun as last year's.  Please join me in thanking Sabrina, Gretchen, the Board, and the Networking Committee for their hard work in making this Reception a success.

Before we know it, October will be upon us.  October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the NHWBA is proud to once again offer a full-day Breast Cancer Legal Advocacy Workshop (approved by the ABA) on October 19, 2012.  One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.  Breast cancer patients face a variety of legal problems related to their illness.  Our program will provide valuable information to practitioners representing patients with breast cancer and other serious illnesses, as well as to those representing patients' family members and survivors.  I encourage you to visit our website at www.nhwba.org to learn more about the program and register today!

Best regards,

Holly J. Kilibarda, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

Help us Celebrate NHWBA's 15th Anniversary

Can you believe it?  The NHWBA will celebrate its 15th Anniversary in May, 2013!  Plans are underway for an event celebrating this milestone and we'd love to have your help.  If you would like to join the event committee, please contact our Executive Director, Gretchen Pyles at Gretchen@nhwba.org.

Spotlight on our Member, Katherine L. Brown

Our spotlight this month is on Katherine L. Brown.  Katherine works in the corporate legal services division of Liberty Mutual Group in Dover, New Hampshire.  She is a past president of the NHWBA (2006 - 2008) and is the current Vice President - Membership for the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations (NCWBA).

Katherine has been very involved in the NCWBA and has served on its board since 2008.  She most recently served as the organization's treasurer.  When asked about Katherine, Diane Rynerson, the Executive Director of the NCWBA, had the following to say, "Katherine has been a wonderful addition to the NCWBA board.  Her contributions to any group discussion are always calm and collaborative.  She asks all the right questions.  I love working with her because she is clear about what she needs from me and always follows through with anything she promises to do."

Katherine brought the NCWBA's "Food from the Bar" program to New Hampshire, and she and Cathy Shanelaris have co-chaired the NHWBA's annual food drive since it started four years ago.  In fact, thanks to Katherine and Cathy's hard work, the NHWBA was featured in the NCWBA's September Newsletter because of its continued participation in the "Food from the Bar" program.

Katherine is an advocate of women's rights and equality for all.  She currently serves on the New Hampshire Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and on the Gender Equality Committee of the New Hampshire Bar Association.  She was involved in the creation of a report concerning the treatment of female inmates in New Hampshire prisons.  The New Hampshire Advisory Committee issued a report entitled, "Unequal Treatment:  Women Incarcerated in New Hampshire's State Prison System."  Katherine also co-authored an article featured in the 2010 Summer edition of the New Hampshire Bar Journal, which focused on the Gender Equality Survey - 20 Year Follow Up.  She wrote an article with Kristin Mendoza entitled "Ending the Tyranny of the Billable Hour: A Mandate for Change for the 21st Century Law Firm."  Kristin had high praise for Katherine and commented, "I greatly admire Katherine for her passion and commitment to the new bar and committee work she has engaged in over the years.  She shows great intelligence and genuineness in demeanor when interacting with others and I've enjoyed every project I've ever been involved in and every conversation I've ever had with her."

In addition to her work on these various boards and committees, Katherine also found time to speak at last year's 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at the University of New Hampshire entitled "Combating Hate:  Hope to Action."  She is one of those people that everyone respects and wants in their organization. Holly Haines, the Immediate Past President of the NHWBA, explained that "Katherine is an exceptional advocate and leader in our profession and it has been my privilege to serve with her on the board of the NHWBA for so many years.  Katherine is not only dedicated to advancing the interests of women in the profession, both locally and nationally, but she is dedicated to achieving equality for all genders and races and advancing the interests of all who are underserved in our society, as demonstrated through her outreach with the Food from the Bar campaign.  She has been a mentor to me on the NHWBA board, as she has for many others.  Her ongoing commitment to our organization and the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations is without compare."
