News and Events:
March 2012

Greetings!

March is Women's History Month, when we should honor and remember the accomplishments of women in the profession.

In celebration of Women's History Month, the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession has compiled interesting facts about women in the law, and to supplement those, I have included New Hampshire facts below:

Did you know that Margaret Brent was the first woman lawyer in America, arriving in the colonies in 1638?  She was a master negotiator, an accomplished litigator, and a respected leader.

Did you know that it took until 1879 before the first woman was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court?

Did you know that in 1890, Marilla Ricker from Dover, New Hampshire petitioned the New Hampshire Supreme Court for the right of women to practice law in this state and won, yet she never applied for admission to the New Hampshire Bar?

Did you know that it took until 1917 before a woman was admitted to practice law in New Hampshire and that woman was Winifred McLaughlin?

Did you know that before she petitioned for the right of women to practice law in New Hampshire, Marilla Ricker was appointed the first woman Commissioner and Examiner in the Court of Chancery in Washington D.C.?

Did you know that it took more than 60 years before the 100th woman was admitted to practice law in New Hampshire?  That 100th woman was Nancy Dodge who was admitted on November 1, 1977.

Did you know that the first woman appointed to the New Hampshire Judiciary was Jean Burling in 1979?

Did you know that the first woman appointed to both the Superior and Supreme Courts was Linda Dalianis?  She was appointed to the Superior Court in 1980 and to the Supreme Court in 2000.

Did you know that Christina O'Neil is the only woman ever appointed to the New Hampshire Probate Court?  She was appointed in 1987.

Did you know that Hillary Rodham Clinton served as the first chair of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession (1987-1991)?

Did you know that Roberta Cooper Ramos became the first woman ABA President in 1995?  Since then, four women have served or will serve as president.

And, did you know that the NHWBA is New Hampshire's first statewide women's bar association and was incorporated in May 1998 by Maureen Raiche Manning, Jennifer L. Parent, Joy V. Riddell, Claudia C. Damon and Julie Introcaso?

I hope that you celebrate Women's History Month by thanking one of the women lawyers who has been an inspiration to you.

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association
