Greetings!
As we begin a new calendar year, we are reminded of accomplishments from years past and what still needs to be accomplished for the future. Several years ago, the theme of the NHWBA term was focused on attaining work-life balance for all of our members. Lauren Stiller Rikleen gave a presentation reminding our members that women lawyers can have it all, just not necessarily at the same time. To continue this dialogue, the NHWBA recently partnered with the UNH Law School's Women's Law Student Association to present a panel on work-life balance to law students. At that panel, NHWBA members Tina Annis, Karyl Martin and Marilyn McNamara spoke to UNH law students about achieving work-life balance while being successful lawyers and successful mothers at different stages of their careers. The discussion was candid and informative and the resounding message from the panel was that women law students need to decide: (1) what type of lawyer do you want to be; (2) what type of mother do you want to be; and (3) what type of person do you want to be. You need to recognize that you cannot have it all and do it all perfectly at the same time, so you need to pick your battles wisely and figure out what concessions you can make to achieve the balance you and your partners or family need. I challenge each of you to answer these questions for yourself as you begin the new year so that you can achieve the balance and success you deserve.
From our recent interactions with women leaders from the Caribbean, Panama, Liberia and Russia as part of the Department of State's International Visitors Leadership Program, we learned that these balance issues transcend boundaries and women lawyers in other nations deal with the same challenges that we face here in New Hampshire. For these interactions, I am delighted announce that the NHWBA was recently nominated for a public service award with the NCWBA for our collaboration in the past year with the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire (WAC) in "Forming International Partnerships." WAC Program Director, Tim Horgan, wrote a letter in support of our nomination noting: "This collaboration with the NHWBA has been very helpful in promoting international friendships . . . one handshake at a time. This sort of person-to-person diplomacy helps to build relationships, improving the image of the US abroad and has an impact on developing countries throughout the world." I encourage you to join us at our next meeting with women leaders through the International Visitors Leadership Program. The meetings are transformative and a great reminder that our mission extends beyond the borders of our state because we are part of a global profession in pursuit of justice. I look forward to seeing you there.
Best regards,
Holly B. Haines, President

ABA President Calls for the Removal of Barriers so Women Attorneys can Equally Participate in the Practice of Law In the January 2012 edition of the ABA Journal, ABA President, Bill Robinson, discusses the barriers that continue to deny women equal participation in the practice of law. He points out that "[t]he underrepresentation of women in law firm leadership positions and the disparity in compensation have contributed to the high rate of attrition of women from the profession." He touches on other reasons for this attrition including law firms' inflexibility with billable hour requirements, stigmatization of part-time and flex-time programs, and unequal treatment of women in allocating credit for business development. He concludes that equality for women attorneys is a work in progress and one that must be fostered. To read more, click here. |
Unspoken Rules for Women's Career Advancement Discussed in ABA Journal In the most recent ABA Journal, Jane Pigott, the managing director of R3Group in Chicago, E. Lynn Grayson, a partner at Jenner & Block, and Deb Sofield, a presentations coach, found that there are unwritten rules women must follow for career advancement. They listed seven steps for moving up and getting ahead. Those steps include determining the informal leadership network, building relationships, preparing for evaluations, providing quality work, showcasing your leadership skills, gaining positive visibility, and self promoting. To read the entire list, click here. |
Confirmation of Federal Judicial Nominees Slowed at the End of 2011 Amy Matsui, Senior Counsel for the National Women's Law Center, reported in a recent newsletter of the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations that while US Senate leaders agreed in the beginning of 2011 to process judicial nominees more quickly, they failed to vote on 21 pending nominees at the end of last year. The Senate confirmed 15 nominees in October, 2011, 6 in November, and 5 in December. When the Senate recessed on December 16, 2011, all but two of the 21 nominees had been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee with significant bipartisan support, 16 unanimously. Yet, no vote to confirm these nominees was held. Attorney Matsui reported that confirming the pending nominees at the end of December would have added much-needed diversity to the federal judiciary, including gender diversity. She notes that the vacancy rate in the federal judiciary has remained around 10 percent for over 20 months. She advocates contacting your Senators to implore them to vote on the nominees left pending at the end of 2011. |
2012 Best Law Firms for Women Initiative Announced by the National Association for Female Executives and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC Law firms with fifty or more lawyers in the United States are invited to apply to be named one of the best law firms for women in 2012. The winners will be featured in the December 2012/January 2013 issue of Working Mother magazine, and honored at a special awards event in late 2012. In determining the winning law firms, hard data is collected from the law firms themselves. The application includes questions about female representation, women's initiatives, workplace culture, networking, flexibility, mentoring, compensation, partnership and advancement. The scoring is determined by female presence, roles, policies, programs and usage rates, as reported by the law firms. All applicant firms receive confidential feedback on their own performance in the form of a scorecard that provides the firm's ranking in each of the key areas of the application as compared to all applicants. The deadline for submission of the completed application is April 13, 2012 and an informational conference call will be held on February 7, 2012 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. For more information, click here. |

Parent, Joy V. Riddell, Claudia C. Damon and Julie Introcaso? Did you know that the NHWBA was formed when the women's county bar groups joined to establish a statewide women's bar association? We have come a long way since 1998, and have a diverse and talented group of women attorneys to thank for the creation of our organization. Disability Facts that Might Surprise You

Provided by Mary Atwood, a financial representative with The Northern New England Agency, a MassMutual Agency; courtesy of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual)
In times like these, good decisions matter. And when it comes to protecting a portion of your income from disability risks, it's important to base your decision on the facts. In the case of disability, some of those facts might surprise you.
For example, more than one-quarter of today's 20 year-olds will become disabled before they retire.1 And if you are covered by a group disability income policy through your employer, you might not know about the likely gap between your policy's benefits and your family's actual needs.
To start with, they typical group plan only covers 50-70% of income. And benefits are often taxable, have maximum limits, and don't cover bonuses, commissions or 401(k) contributions. In some cases, worker's compensation helps bridge the gap, but less than 5% of disabling accidents and illnesses are work related.2
If you run a business, your insurance protection should help cover its operating costs, possibly provide the funds for a partnership buyout, and protect a portion of lost earnings - either your or your employees'.
The most common way to close the gap between existing coverage and actual needs is to obtain a supplemental individual disability income insurance policy. Because you own it, you can take it with you throughout your career.
And the best way to make a good decision about that policy is to work with a trusted, trained financial professional. No surprise there.
