News and Events:
October 2011

Greetings!

Fall is here and in full swing and women are in the news.  On a local level, our Annual Fall Reception was both well attended and well received.  This year we recognized Lucy Hodder from Rath, Young and Pignatelli with the 2011 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award for her exemplary achievements on behalf of women and the profession.  I want to personally thank Erin Wolf, our dedicated Public Relations Officer who chaired the Fall Reception Committee, for all of her hard work in putting this together.  I also send a special thank you to all of our sponsors who helped us make this event so successful and I look forward to seeing you at the Fall Reception next year.

The NHWBA has hired its first Executive Director and I am excited to introduce her to you: Gretchen E. Pyles, Esquire.  Gretchen is an attorney and a mother with an extensive background in civic involvement and community service focused on advancing and educating women and girls, and she is an asset to our organization.  She strongly supports our mission of promoting and supporting the interests of women in the legal community through leadership, professional interaction, education, and the exchange of ideas between our members and the community.  With her direction, we hope to grow this organization and increase the benefits we offer to members.  Gretchen is available to answer your questions, to take your suggestions and to offer you assistance with our organization or events at any time.  She can be reached at Gretchen@NHWBA.Org. Please welcome her to our organization.

On a national level, the NH State Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights recently found unequal treatment of women and men in the New Hampshire State Prison System after a two year intensive study.  October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. These are critical issues which we all must remain aware of.  While much progress has been made with Breast Cancer research, prevention and treatment initiatives, Breast Cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed type of non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women.  By educating ourselves and others on the risk factors, signs and symptoms of breast cancer and by supporting research into prevention and treatment initiatives, we can improve the quality of life for all people affected by breast cancer and work toward eradicating this disease.  Although the Violence Against Women Act has been in effect for more than seventeen years, statistics show that one in four women will be the victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.  In light of these startling statistics, if you have not been the victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, you most likely know someone who has.  We must be vigilant in recognizing and combating domestic and sexual violence by supporting victims, bringing offenders to justice and changing societal attitudes that accept such conduct or look the other way, preventing women from reporting incidences of abuse they have suffered.

On an international level, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to three extraordinary women for their non-violent efforts in campaigning against war and oppression of women in the middle east.

Finally, at a state level, there are judicial vacancies that need to be filled.  The Judicial Selection Commission has announced that it is seeking qualified applicants for judicial vacancies at all levels of the New Hampshire Judicial Branch and the NHWBA encourages all of its qualified members to apply.  The notice and application details are provided later in this newsletter.

The fall frenzy of activity is clearly upon us and this newsletter has a lot of information to digest.  I thank you for your continued membership and support of our organization and for taking the time to read this.

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines, President

New Hampshire Women's Bar Association

NHWBA Makes Strides for Breast Cancer

On Sunday, October 16th, several members of NHWBA and their families walked three miles through Manchester as part of the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" event. NHWBA's team raised over $1500 to help fund research and education initiatives.  NHWBA's team walked in celebration of survivorship, in honor of loved ones, and as an occasion to express hope and raise awareness about the steps we can take to help prevent the disease.

NHWBA Board Participates in US Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program

On Monday October 17, 2011, members of the NHWBA Board of Directors met with members of the Caribbean Women's Leadership and Political Participation Project through the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.  These groups met to discuss the progress of women in the political and legal professions in our respective nations and to compare diversity issues that we share.  During the meeting the groups also discussed the need for women's lobbying, educational and legal groups in our respective nations and the Caribbean lawyers were especially interested in the differences between the unified NH Bar Association and the voluntary NH Women's Bar Association.  This international exchange of ideas was enlightening and educational and the NHWBA looks forward to welcoming these women leaders back to New Hampshire for the New Hampshire Women's Leadership Summit in Spring 2012.   Participating Caribbean leaders included the Bahamian Parliament Opposition Whip, Melanie Sharon Griffin, the Campaign Director for the PRD Party in the Dominican Republic, Faride Virginia Raful, Attorney Leslie-Ann Holukoff from Grenada, The Manager of Guyana Legal Aid and Vice President of the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers, Simone Morriss-Ramlall, Haitian Executive Director of RESPE, Marlene Gay, Professor at the University of the West Indies, Lisa Ann Vasciannie, and Policy Official at Suriname Ministry of Regional Development, Cheryl Brenda Daal.  Participating members of the NHWBA included President, Holly Haines; Immediate Past President, Kristin Mendoza; Programming Chair, Charla Stevens; Membership Secretary, Nicole Cook; Belknap County Representative Lynne Sabean;  Cheshire County Representative Sheila Burnham; Hillsborough North County Representative Kara Simard; and Strafford County Representative Sandra Cabrera.

US Commission on Civil Rights

Finds Unequal Treatment of Women vs. Men

in the State Prison System

In a report issued on October 17, 2011, the New Hampshire State Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights found disparity in the treatment of women versus men in the state prison system.  According to the two year study, there is a lack of adequate job training, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and private space for family visits in the women's prison.  The Committee concluded that the state's treatment of female inmates raises constitutional concerns.  To read the Committee's full report, click here.
