September 2011

Greetings!

As we begin the 2011-2012 year, I am excited to announce that the NHWBA has hired its first Executive Director, Gretchen Pyles, Esquire.  Please join me in welcoming her to our organization.  We look forward to moving our organization forward with the assistance of her direction.

I am also excited to welcome four new County Representatives to our Board of Directors who were elected by the Board for the remainder of the 2011-2012 term:  Lynn Sabean from Boutin & Altieri in Meredith, New Hampshire is our new Belknap County Representative; Viktoryia Kovalenko from the Grafton County Superior Court is our new Grafton County Representative; Sandra Cabrera from the Strafford County Superior Court is our new Strafford County Representative; and Sabrina Beavens from Iurillo and Associates is our new Out of State Liaison.  Please welcome them to our Board leadership as well.  We hope to extend our outreach to members in these counties through these appointments, so if you are interested in hosting a program or networking event in one of those counties, please contact the representative and we will coordinate the schedule.

Fall is filled with exciting programs, beginning with our Fall Reception on September 22, 2011 at a new venue at the Concord Country Club where the NHWBA will honor Lucy Hodder, Esquire from Rath, Young and Pignatelli with the 2011 Marilla Ricker Achievement Award.  Please congratulate Lucy on this well deserved award and join us at the reception to recognize her achievements on behalf of women in the profession.  Please also join us on October 11, 2011, when we share an evening with Judge Nancy Gertner who will be discussing her book:  In Defense of Women:  Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate at the Unversity of New Hampshire School of Law and at our Elder Law CLE on October 14, 2011 at the McLane Law Firm.

If you have ideas for programming or networking events that you would like to attend, please let us know.  We want to make your membership matter.

As always, thank you for your membership and I hope to see you at one of our events this fall.

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines, President

The reception will include the presentation of the 2011 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award to Lucy C. Attorney Hodder is a shareholder in the health care practice group of Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.C. She has been named one of The Best Lawyers in America by Woodward White, as well as a New England Super Lawyer for health care law.  She is a board member of the Women's Policy Institute and was appointed to the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women beginning in 1998, and chaired the commission from 2003 to 2004.  In support of the nomination of Attorney Hodder for the Ricker Award, one of her nominators wrote:  "In addition to her strong commitment to her clients, Lucy is equally devoted to advancing the causes of women to improve their health, welfare and well-being and to increase the likelihood of women's success and achievement in all avenues of life.  She has been an outstanding mentor and role model for younger women attorneys, both within the firm and around the State."

In April 1994, with twenty years of groundbreaking and controversial cases behind her, Nancy Gertner was appointed to serve as a Federal Judge in Massachusetts. In her book, In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate, Gertner reflects upon her career as an outspoken, "outsider" lawyer, advocating criminal and civil cases focused on women's rights, civil liberties, and breaking down the gender barriers of the 1970s and 80s.

In Defense of Women chronicles one woman's revolutionary career at a time when the world around her was trying to hold her back. For young lawyers looking for guidance, Gertner writes that, when it comes to becoming a judge, there is "no right way, no clear path," noting that, "the issue is less where you start than where you end up." The lessons she imparts about fighting for what you believe in, and striving against all odds to create the life you want for yourself, ring as true for women in the 21st century as they did in the 1970s. Gertner wrote the book to record those struggles. "I wanted to memorialize these stories, if only for my kids, my friends, myself," she writes. "I had been there, done that. It had been quite a ride; important lessons had been learned personally and professionally; and maybe-just maybe-some good had been done."

Given our aging population, it is likely that most practitioners will encounter elder law issues even in a general practice.  Join four New Hampshire attorneys who focus in this area to get an overview of the most important issues in elder law today, and how to spot them.  We will concentrate on practical advice, including insights on how to advise those who provide care to their elderly family members.  The program will include an interactive discussion of common ethical issues which arise in this area.

In 2010, more than 800,000 walkers across the country - including 1,965 in Manchester - joined the American Cancer Society in the united fight against breast cancer. More than $60 million was raised through Making Strides events, with more than $6 million of that in New England.

Join us for a few hours of exercise, inspiration, camaraderie, entertainment, and most importantly, to honor someone you know who has been affected by breast cancer - especially if that person is you.

Gaining Control Over Family Finances

Life Insurance Company (MassMutual)

What is the sign of a good decision?®

It's gaining control over family finances. A recent study commissioned by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and conducted by Forbes Consulting Group in 2009 titled, State of the American Family: Families, Financial Attitudes & Planning, explored how parents feel about finances, their families, and ways that they are adapting to meet new challenges.

Wishing for control, but running off course

Most American families want to control their finances. They want to know as much as possible about financial products and services before committing to them, and want to have control over all aspects of their finances. They often think about looking into various financial products and services that could help them achieve such major life goals as buying a house, saving for college, and preparing for retirement.

However, many family decision makers feel they fall short - they wish they were more in control of their finances. Despite their intentions, many Americans often feel uncomfortable with how they are doing. Some feel as if they are living month to month as they try to pay off old students loans and save money to buy their own home and, while they acknowledge the need to save towards their retirement, their immediate needs take priority. Others worry about meeting their long-term financial goals, citing a lack of planning. Most feel overwhelmed and concerned about whether they can manage growing expenses, especially while incomes are stagnant. Finally, there are those who face the uncertainties of how they'll help care for aging parents or recoup the value of retirement savings diminished by the recession.

No matter the stage of life or economic situation, American families struggle with similar concerns in this slow economic growth period: how to prepare and save to maximize financial resources, for now and into the future.

Setting a course

Although the economic downturn since 2008 has taken its toll in a variety of ways - in income, investment value, and home prices - a commitment to sound financial preparation can help minimize and offset exposure to such losses. Whether caught between providing financial support for children and saving funds for retirement or frustrated by declining availability and access to pension plans or 401(k) employer matches, families at all stages face the challenge of balancing the immediate needs of their complex lives and financial demands with their long-range plans for the future. Combine these demands with the vast amount of financial data available at the touch of a button, and the result can overwhelm Americans who strive to feel confident that their financial decisions are the best ones for their families.

Guidance from qualified financial professionals can help overcome hesitancy and bring balance to the most challenging of financial circumstances. Working with a financial professional who understands your unique, specific financial needs, can help you to establish key financial goals, make financial decisions a priority, and manage debt.

Gaining control

It's never too late to gain control and begin preparing for the future.
