News and Events:
March 2011

Greetings!

Spring is here and it is time to take a break, enjoy the growth of grass and flowers and join the NHWBA at our Work-Stress Relief Weekend at the Inn and Spa at Mill Falls in Meredith, New Hampshire on April 8-9, 2011.  In addition to providing respite and relaxation from the daily grind, this event is a wonderful networking opportunity to connect with your fellow members and reconnect with those you may not have seen in a while in an informal setting.  Betsy Black will be presenting a seminar on Positive Psychology - What it is and how it can help you, which includes a yoga and stretching session with a relaxing view of Lake Winnipesaukee.  If you cannot join us for the weekend, join us for dinner at Lago and enjoy good food, fun and conversation.

Women in the New Hampshire Judiciary remain in the news and are highlighted below.  Governor Lynch nominated Superior Court Justice Tina Nadeau to become Chief Justice of the Superior Court and Superior Court Justice Jacalyn Colburn was recently profiled by UNH Law School Magazine.  In keeping with this newsworthy trend, we are again offering our Path to the Bench Seminar to encourage you to apply for judicial positions as they come open and to walk you through the process as you do so.  More information is below.  We are looking forward to an exciting spring with our programming and hope to see you soon at a programming or networking event.

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines

Women in the Judiciary - In the News

Judge Tina Nadeau was nominated to become the next Chief Justice of the Superior Court. Governor Lynch nominated Judge Nadeau noting that she "has distinguished herself as a thoughtful jurist. In her 15 years on the bench, she has proved to be someone who possesses a commitment to justice and an in-depth knowledge of the law." Click here to read Governor Lynch's press release.

Judge Jacalyn Colburn was profiled in University of New Hampshire Magazine. The article highlights her career with the New Hampshire Public Defender and especially her unique resolution to the Jim Dozios Negligent Homicide case. Click here to read the article, An Uncharted Path.

Although women comprise approximately one-half of all graduating law students, they continue to be under-represented in the judiciary. This program aims to give women a better understanding of the professional satisfaction of being a judge and to highlight the skills most useful in serving in the capacity of a judge, many of which are well within most women's skill sets.  It will also provide an overview of the judicial selection process and practical advice and information for those who wish to seek judicial appointment. The goal is to have attendees leave the program feeling both inspired to seek appointment within the judiciary and confident that they have what it takes to be a successful candidate.

EXPECTED PANELISTS:

Hon. Linda S. Dalianis; Hon. Gillian Abramson; Hon. Jacalyn S. Colburn; Hon. Landya McCafferty; Hon. Susan Ashley; Marital Master Deborah Rein and Emily Rice, Esq. and Katherine Hanna, Esq. as current and former chairs of the Judicial Selection Commission.

Stay tuned for updated information regarding CLE credit for this exciting program.

Given our aging population, it is likely that most practitioners will encounter elder law issues even in a general practice.  Join four New Hampshire attorneys who focus in this area to get an overview of the most important issues in elder law today, and how to spot them.  We will concentrate on practical advice, including insights on how to advise those who provide care to their elderly family members.  The program will include an interactive discussion of common ethical issues which arise in this area.

Powerful Women Reflect on Their Successes

Women constitute a significant percentage of the lawyers in law firms, corporate legal departments, and government, and have represented approximately 50 percent of law school graduates for more than 25 years.  They are positioned to exercise power and influence and effectuate change.  But, most women lawyers are not exercising power.  A panel of powerful women lawyers discussed how they made it to the top during "Women and Power:  Getting Ambitious About Ambition," a program presented by the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.
