News and Events:
November 2010

Greetings!

With the holidays quickly approaching, we are reminded that it is a time of giving; both for giving thanks for what we have and for giving back to the community and to others who may have less.  The NHWBA is giving thanks for many things this year and wants to thank you and all of its members by inviting you to our annual Holiday Party, which will be held at UnWined in Manchester on December 15, 2010 at 5:30.   Appetizers, fondue and some wine will be provided, there will also be a cash bar.   The NHWBA is also giving back to the community and invites you to join us as we pack holiday turkey boxes for people who do not have the means to provide their own holiday dinners on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. at New Horizons in Manchester.  Please see below for further information on each of these exciting events.  I hope to see you all at our Holiday Party in December.

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines

Volunteer Opportunity!
Join Us To Pack Holiday Turkey Baskets for the Hungry

Each year New Horizons Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry in Manchester distributes hundreds of turkey dinner baskets during the holiday season to families in need throughout the greater Manchester area.  There is a critical need for not only food donations of dinner staples
including canned vegetables, jarred gravy and boxed rice & instant potatoes, but also for volunteers to help pack the boxes with nonperishable foods items in preparation for their distribution in mid-December.

Join us on Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 5:30-8 pm as we help package these much needed and appreciated holiday dinner boxes.  If you are unavailable to donate your time on November 18, we hope you might consider donating some of the critical need food items or making a monetary donation on behalf of NHWBA.  Donated food items and monetary donations can be dropped off at New Horizons.

Please contact Nicole Morse at nmorse0810@comcast.net with any questions.

The Pay Gap Between Female and Male Attorneys

Data from the 2009 New Hampshire Gender Equality Survey indicates that the pay gap between female and male attorneys is alive and well.  The Summer 2010 New Hampshire Bar Journal featured an article entitled "The Glass Ceiling Reinforced" by Joni Esperian, Karyl Martin and Erin Stearns, which analyzed the data from the Gender Equality Survey.  This article can be found here at page 60.

The National Association of Women Lawyers and the NAWL Foundation Report of the Fifth Annual National Survey on Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms

This report on the professional progress of women in the 200 largest US law firms, now in its fifth year, becomes more useful with each passing year, as it can be looked to as a benchmark on progress because of its careful attention to definitions. The four-year Utah study is important because of its thoughtful analysis and recommendations.  While the demographic data are specific to Utah, they are presented in a national context, and so will be valuable to all who are interested in the progress of women in the law.
