News and Events:
October 2010 |
|
Greetings!
October is a month when women and women's issues are recognized on a national and local scale.
On a local scale, October is the month of our annual Fall Reception. This year, the NHWBA will be honoring two outstanding women at our Fall Reception on October 28, 2010. Marital Master Deborah Kane Rein will receive the Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award for her exemplary service to the profession and Andrea Christensen will be recognized with the Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship for her academic achievement as a second year woman law student at the UNH School of Law.
On a national scale, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
While much progress has been made with Breast Cancer research, prevention and treatment initiatives, Breast Cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed type of non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women. By educating ourselves and others on the risk factors, signs and symptoms of breast cancer and by supporting research into prevention and treatment initiatives, we can improve the quality of life for all people affected by breast cancer and work toward eradicating this disease. In an effort to support breast cancer research, the NHWBA formed a team to walk in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and has been raising donations for the American Cancer Society. We encourage you to join our team in the walk on October 17, 2010 or to support our team by making a donation to breast cancer research and awareness. Information on how to do so is contained later in this newsletter.
Although the Violence Against Women Act has been in effect for more than sixteen years, statistics show that one in four women will be the victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. In light of these startling statistics, if you have not been the victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, you most likely know someone who has. We must be vigilant in recognizing and combating domestic and sexual violence by supporting victims, bringing offenders to justice and changing societal attitudes that accept such conduct or look the other way, preventing women from reporting incidences of abuse they have suffered. The NHWBA is working to bring its 2000 Marilla Ricker Award Recipient, the Hon. Susan B. Carbon, to speak to our members about the Office for Violence Against Women at the US Department of Justice, which she directs for the Obama Administration. We hope that she will address the progress New Hampshire has made in addressing domestic and sexual violence and the priorities of her office on a national scale. Stay tuned to our newsletter and website for details about this exciting presentation.
Finally, in recognition of women's issues and the law, I encourage you to read the Summer 2010 New Hampshire Bar Journal which addresses the most recent Gender Equality Survey results and which identifies areas that still need to be addressed to promote the advancement of women in all aspects of the profession from litigation to the public sector to the judiciary. The Summer 2010 Bar Journal can be accessed here.
I encourage and challenge you to get involved this month with increasing the awareness of all of these issues that are important to women in our profession, in our state and in our nation, and I hope to see you on October 28, 2010 at our Fall Reception.
Best regards, Holly B. Haines
