Spa Weekend Highlights!

Warm breezes, sunny skies and friendly smiles greeted attendees of this year's Work/Stress Relief Spa Weekend. From Friday's dinner at Lago Restaurant, a hearty breakfast at the Waterfall Cafe on Saturday morning and pampering at the Cascade spa, members were treated to the best that the Inns & Spa at Mill Falls in Meredith, New Hampshire had to offer.  Betsy Black was also present to remind members about all the little things that can be done to achieve better time management and stress management and to teach some simple yoga techniques.

Our first evening with Sherry Young was a success!

Join us on May 13th with the next NHBA President, Marilyn Billings McNamara!

Marilyn is a domestic relations lawyer with over thirty years of experience in all aspects of the field. Following graduation from Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, she co-founded the Family and Housing Law Clinic (now the Civil Clinic) at the Center and served as co-director and instructor for the clinic's first year. She developed a statewide domestic relations practice based in Lebanon, NH, followed by eight years as the executive director of the Legal Advice and Referral Center, a Concord-based federally funded poverty law program providing family and housing law advice, counsel and referral services to low-income clients. She is currently Of Counsel at the law firm of Upton & Hatfield LLP.

Life is a Balancing Act!
Work/Life Balance Forum

As a professional woman, there are many responsibilities that rest on your shoulders. Family. Career. Community. Self. Deep down inside, you know that physical and emotional health should be high on your priority list, but what about your financial well-being?

MassMutual Financial Group and the NHWBA invite you to "Life is a Balancing Act!" a lively discussion around the unique challenges women face and the possible strategies to help create balance between family, career, and financial independence for today and in the future.

We will have a panel discussion on everything from juggling kids and schedules to the competing priorities of saving for retirement and college-all at the same time. The panel will include a life coach, a financial advisor and several esteemed NHWBA members who have 'been there, done that'.

The program will appeal to women who are the financial decision makers, so basically all of us.

Come laugh and learn with us!

When:     Thursday, May 6, 2010
Where:    Nixon Peabody
                900 Elm Street, Manchester, NH

This program runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is open to all New Hampshire attorneys.

Light refreshments will be served.

Donate to Food Drive and Help Feed Hungry Children

For the second consecutive year, the NHWBA is participating in a national women's bar project led by the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations (NCWBA) and aimed at feeding hungry children.

All food items and montetary donations collected in New Hampshire during the project will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank to help with the increased need for food during the summer months. Specifically, the New Hampshire Food Bank and local food pantries have the added strain of families needing more food because they cannot rely upon the school for a hot lunch for their children.

From April 19th to May 14th, the NHWBA will be collecting canned fruit, pasta items (boxed, canned or bagged) and monetary donations for the New Hampshire Food Bank. When making a monetary donation, checks should be made payable to "NH Food Bank." Please send checks to the NHWBA at P.O. Box 915, Manchester, NH 03105.

This year the NHWBA has set a goal for our membership to collect 3,000 food items and $3,000 in check donations. Donations of all sizes are welcomed and encouraged. We know that we will be able to achieve, and likely exceed, this goal if every member makes a thoughtful contribution and requests others in their offices to contribute as well.

Food donations made within individual firms and offices will be collected by NHWBA representatives from May 14th to May 19th. To notify the NHWBA that your office has collected food for the project and arrange for pick up, contact Katherine Brown at k.b.moto@live.com or Cathy Shanelaris at cathy@sandslawfirm.com.

Commission on Women Seeking Women Law Firm Owners for New Book

The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession is developing a new book entitled, The Road to Independence: A Woman's Guide to Forming Her Own Law Firm. This volume will be a collection of letters (maximum 4 pages double-spaced) focusing on the experiences, challenges, and opportunities of women-owned law firms.

The Commission is seeking women who have formed their own firms -- whether as a solo, with other women, or with men; it is not necessary that the women currently be owners of their firms. The book's audience is primarily women who are thinking about starting their own law firms as well as those who already have taken that step.

Click here for more information about the book and the procedures for submitting letters.
