Greetings!

An interesting article was posted in this week's online edition of the ABA Journal:

Too Many Women Lawyers are Like Oz's Dorothy, Partner Says
By Debra Cassens Weiss

Women lawyers looking for advancement would do well to study Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, according to a law firm partner who founded the Opt-In Project.

"Dorothy was a true leader," writes Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe employment law partner Patricia Gillette in a post for the Am Law Daily. "She identified the tasks at hand, formulated a plan, and overcame obstacles to reach her goals: a brain for the scarecrow, a heart for the tin man, and courage for the cowardly lion."
But Dorothy had a failing, much like many women lawyers. "When push came to shove, what did Dorothy ultimately ask for herself from the Wizard? Nothing," Gillette says. Too many women lawyers are like Dorothy, asking for no credit, reward or recognition, she writes. "And thus, no one knows what she has done and no one thinks of her as a leader."

Gillette says women need to take a more active role in managing and advancing their careers, in part by courting clients, socializing with firm leaders, touting their capabilities and pressuring firms to expand leadership opportunities for women.

Law firms also need to do their part by changing systems that have held women back, she says. Gillette's Opt-In Project, founded with another lawyer, was designed to find out how firms can do a better job retaining women lawyers.

I don't think I'll look at wearing my red pumps at the office in the same way ever again!

Sincerely,

Kristin Mendoza
President

NHWBA ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR THE
MARILLA M. RICKER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The New Hampshire Women's Bar Association, a statewide Bar Association founded to promote and support the advancement and interest of women in the legal community through leadership, professional interaction, education and the exchange of ideas between our members and the community, is accepting nominations for the 2009 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award.

The Award is named for the woman who petitioned the New Hampshire Supreme Court for the right for women to practice law in New Hampshire.  In 1890, with all justices concurring, Marilla Ricker won the right women lawyers have today.  In 1907, Marilla Ricker stated, "I think we should all work for equal suffrage, and I trust the time is not far distant when no man or woman will ever admit that it was ever opposed in New Hampshire.  I want New Hampshire to be the banner state of the east on the equal suffrage question."

The Award named in honor of Marilla Ricker honors outstanding women lawyers in New Hampshire who have achieved professional excellence or paved the way to success for other women lawyers or advanced opportunities for women in the profession or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.

This fall, NHWBA will offer a series of five 2-hour evening mini-courses that focus on specific aspects of client development.
