News & Events
Greetings!

Last Friday, I attended the New Hampshire Women's Leadership Summit hosted by Southern New Hampshire University.  This year was the summit's second year and personally, I thought the event was even better than last year.  Not only were there a number of helpful workshops to better hone professional skills and objectives and a side-splitting lunchtime address by the funny and insightful Loretta Laroche but the entire day was capped off with a thoughtful and inspiring keynote address by Gloria Steinem.

Throughout the day, I heard a common theme by the speakers that was best described by Ms. Steinem as women needing to practice the "Reverse Golden Rule" -- which is to say that women need to treat and care for themselves as they treat and care for others.

I suspect that deep down, we all know this but that it's the practice of it that is where many of us falter.  And since we all know that habits are created through repetition (21 days of repetition by some accounts), if you believe you are someone who could benefit from practicing the Reverse Golden Rule, try to make it more than just an occasional act.  This is truly one habit work developing!

Sincerely,

Kristin Mendoza
President

Farewell to Lee Leppennan

Lee Leppennan, who has been the dedicated Treasurer of our organization since 1999, is stepping down from the board to complete her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University of New England in Keene New Hampshire.  Lee is only the second treasurer that the NHWBA has elected since 1998 and retained her position due to her attention to detail and success in managing our annual budget to the penny.  The NHWBA has been audited only once in her tenure as our treasurer and the auditor found that her books were impeccable.

Lee is a woman of many lives, which have been varied, exciting and diverse. But the constant features of all of her life choices involve helping and teaching others, educating herself and fostering her intellectual curiosity, and maintaining balance by her varied interests in life.

Lee began her first life as a registered nurse in Wisconsin in 1968.  She then joined the United States Navy as an Ensign in the medical corps.  In the Navy, Lee spent years in California, Japan, Washington, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia.  She worked her way through the ranks of the medical corps, attaining the rank of Commander by her retirement in 1989.  During her military service, she earned her BSN from San Diego State University.  Upon her return to the United States, Lee obtained her MSN in cardiovascular nursing from the University of Washington, while still working full time in the Naval Medical Corps.

After working in cardiac nursing and running a Naval ICU, Lee decided that she wanted more involvement in the quality assurance and risk management aspects of nursing and requested a transfer to Memphis, Tennessee where she could attend law school part time while remaining a full time nurse in the Navy.  It took Lee five years to complete law school, but during that five years she managed to get promoted to the special assistant to the Commanding Officer, she drafted the JAG manual for medical malpractice investigations, which is still being used today, and she took accounting courses at Memphis State University - - just for fun!  After law school, she worked as the assistant director of the legal department for a naval hospital and retired as a commander in the Naval Nursing Corps in 1989.  She was given an honorary JAG designation from the JAG corps for her dedicated service.

On her retirement, Lee returned to Wisconsin and practiced personal injury law for five years.  She decided to join several friends and retire to a life of leisure in New Hampshire in 1994.  Upon her arrival though, Lee realized she could not be a lady of leisure.  She became a professor and then director of the Franklin Pierce College Paralegal Program, where she taught until 2002.  Lee also worked closely with the Nurse-Attorneys Association of New Hampshire and she received a contract to prosecute for the State of New Hampshire Board of Nursing in 1999.  Lee prosecuted many professional nurses between 1999 and 2005 and the problems that she encountered only emphasized the need for her to help professionals with mental health and addiction issues, so they can get help before they reach a point of losing their careers.

This led to Lee's next life, which began when she entered the doctoral program at Antioch University of New England in clinical psychology.  Her dissertation and the focus of her next career will be on helping other professionals, specifically lawyers, who suffer from mental health and addiction issues.  Lee has been integrally involved in the Lawyer's Assistance Program and has learned of the extreme need that our profession has to assist others, as well as the vast lack of direct resources to do so.

Lee will be a phenomenal addition to the counseling and legal community, as she has been in every community that she has joined in her life. Nurse, Naval Officer, Lawyer, Prosecutor, Professor, Student, Counselor, and Treasurer of the NHWBA.  These are the nine lives of Lee Leppennan.

The NHWBA Board of Directors will greatly miss Lee's outstanding service as Treasurer and sends their best wishes as she pursues life's next adventure!
FOOD DRIVE FOR CHILDREN A SUCCESS!

The NHWBA food drive provided over 6800 meals to hungry children! Commission on the Status of Women At Risk!

The continuation of the NH Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is in grave danger given the current state of the economy and the greatly reduced dollars available to balance the state budget for the next biennium. At this time, the Committee of Conference is meeting to resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions of the budget. The House-passed version would provide $125,000 per year for each of the next two years (already a 25% reduction, already necessitating the elimination of the Program Assistant position) while the Senate version would only provide $1 in funding to the Commission, essentially curtailing all operations as of July 1, 2009.

The CSW has made the following proposal to the Committee of Conference:

Request one year (only) continued funding at House-approved level of $125,000 (this already represents a 25% reduction from the Governor's budget and would reduce projected allocations by more than $200,000 over the biennium) in order to allow the CSW to do the following:
  • Responsibly fulfill its contractual obligations to funders (NH Bar Foundation, NH Women's Bar Association and the Women's Fund of NH) to finalize publication and distribution of the Legal Handbook for NH Women- 4th Revision, which has just gone to print.
  • Diligently work to explore the viability of future sustainability through outside resources such as private, foundation, and corporate financial support.
  • Take advantage of this absolutely critical timeframe of President Obama's rollout of A.R.R.A. funding to ensure that NH women are trained to enter the workforce on NH highway, bridge, and "Green" construction projects in significant numbers through the Commission-led Better Jobs for NH Women initiative.  These jobs will provide significant increases in salaries and wages for NH women who are supporting their families.
  • Finalize current projects and commitments (NH Women's Heritage Trail, 2009 Women's Recognition Award, Legal Handbook for NH Women, Better Jobs for NH Women- New Traditions).
  • Responsibly and appropriately prepare to transition this 40-year-old agency should other sustainability resources not become available, in keeping with the sunsetting provision included in HB 2 (effective date June 30, 2011) as proposed by the Governor.

The NHWBA Board of Directors has adopted taking a public position in support of this proposal and asks that NHWBA members consider contacting Committee of Conference members (those indicated for HB1 and HB2) to likewise express their support.
