There are actually two significant dates for Chinese New Year - the Lunar Date and the Solar Date.

On January 26th the Chinese celebrate the incoming Lunar New Year of the Ox!  This Spring Festival is marked by the lunar calendar.  Celebrated with fireworks and firecrackers, the dragon and lion dance and people exchange sweet pies and red envelopes.  This tradition is steeped in symbolism and tradition.  For example:

· The loud noise of the fireworks is said to drive away evil spirits.
· The dragon is the deity of great power and benevolence that brings in good luck and prosperity.
· The lion symbolizes power, courage and guardianship and wards off unwanted spirits.
·  The sweet pies are said to call forth sweetness and good fortune to one's life.
·  The red envelopes, which always contain money, are given to friends and family as a symbol of wealth and luck.

Preparation for the incoming year includes putting your life in order by means of cleaning the home from top to bottom, resolving disputes and donning new or fresh clothing.  It is a time for reconnecting with family and extended family.

Although not celebrated in the same way, the Solar Chinese New Year marks the first day of Spring, typically Feb. 3 or 4 each year.  The Solar Calendar is also known as the Hsia Calendar or Farmer's Calendar.  This year the Solar New Year begins February 4, 2009.  This date marks a significant shift in the earth's magnetic field and is used for both Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology.  Therefore, it is around this time we do Annual Feng Shui Updates and it's a great time to review your destiny for the upcoming year.
