What Do You Say Communique'
 March 2011 - "Is This Pie-Worthy?"

Greetings!

Sarita's Photo
In this month's Communique', I focus on PIE.

I'm not referring to apple, sweet potato or mincemeat; this pie represents how much energy we have to expend on a typical day.

I  borrowed this--with permission--from a stress management colleague, Roger Mellott.  He contends that we get one "energy pie" each day and that we must carefully decide how, and to whom, we dole out each slice.

Recently reminded of this analogy, I now challenge my audience members to ask, in each situation that requires their energy:

IS THIS PIE-WORTHY?

Take a look below at some of the habits that gobble up energy pie and see if you recognize yourself.  Then, try out some of my favorite strategies!

All the best,

HABITS THAT CAUSE STRESS

(ie- Gobble up your energy pie)

1. PERFECTIONIST

Strategies:

-Ask for help...focus on what other person can contribute
-Reality check:  Which things can be less than perfect?

2. TRYING TO FIX/CONTROL OTHERS

Strategies:

-Remember...people have been this way since 4 years old!
-Serenity prayer: Know what you can fix and what you can't

3. TOO MANY PRIORITIES

Strategies:

-Distinguish between urgent and important

-Set bite-size goals for your non-urgent "Someday I will..." list

4. OVERANALYZING

Strategies:

-3 P's - Most things are not PERSONAL, not PERMANENT and don't affect the big PICTURE...so don't dwell on them

-By the way, if you're reading this and thinking "I wonder what she means by overanalyzing"...then, you're overanalyzing!

5. PEOPLE PLEASING

Strategies:

--Say NO nicely..."I appreciate the offer, however I'll pass."

--Consider the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt:

"Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you'll be criticized anyway."

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

"The purpose of life, afterall is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experiences."

For all 5 Habits ASK:

Is this pie-worthy?
