Speak.

Play.

Love.

This month's Communique' can best be summed up with these three words--speak, play, love...not to be confused with the suspiciously similar words of a popular book and current movie.

More specifically, this edition includes:

  • SPEAK: A self-reflection writing activity from a recent breakout session  I participated in called "Speak Loudly and Carry a Big Pen."
  • PLAY:  Words of wisdom from seasoned staff on how to achieve career success and the importance of balancing work and PLAY to stay motivated
  • LOVE:  Finding ways to love what you do and tap into your inner voice.

And of course, I've included some valuable resources...more Master U Academy FREE Teleseminars and a powerful weekend workshop!

Thanks so much for being a colleague and Communique' reader!

SPEAK. PLAY. LOVE.

"You're a poet and didn't even know it." - Keith Harrell

Keith Harrell, one of the great motivational speakers of all time, recently passed away.  Among my favorite memories of Keith was the quote/voice message (above) he left on my voicemail after hearing the rhyming greeting I'd recorded at that time.

I was recently reminded that we are indeed poets, and, perhaps, we didn't even know it.

While attending a higher education conference in Vancouver, Washington where I was the conference closing keynote speaker, I attended a thought-provoking breakout session by Chanira Reang Sperry of University of Washington.  The workshop was entitled "Speak Loudly and Carry a Big Pen:  Creating Space and Place for Your Inner Voice."

In the breakout session we were encouraged to listen to and express our inner voice by writing a poem.  To assist us in creating the poem, we were asked to write a sentence in response to a series of incomplete phrases such as "I am...", "I wonder" and "I want."

Use the "I am" template below to create your own poem and gain useful insights into yourself!  Better yet, use it as a team building activity for your staff!

 "I Am"

Poem Template

Complete each phrase to create your personal poem. Use this as a team building activity with your staff!

I am...

(two characteristics that describe you)

I wonder...

I hear...

I see...

I want...

I am...(restate first line)

I pretend...

I feel...

I touch...

I worry...

I cry...

I am...(repeat first line)

I understand...

I say...

I dream...

I try...

I hope...

I am... (repeat first line)
