The Art of  Sharing Feedback...Be Specific!

  Lesson 1:

 Go Beyond
 "Bad Attitude"

Telling someone they have a "bad attitude" will not only be met with defensiveness, it also provides no useful information on SPECIFIC behavior that can be changed.

We must go beyond "bad attitude" in our feedback comments.  And, even better, share the negative impact of the behavior.

For example:

"I'm concerned that when you raise your voice with customers, they'll feel unwelcome and take their business elsewhere."

"When you sigh heavily when coworkers request your assistance, they may see you as uncooperative."

  Lesson  2:

More than
"Good Job!"

While it's very flattering to hear praise such as "good job!", it's even more valuable to receive SPECIFC positive feedback  on repeatable behavior .

For example:

"I liked the way you followed thru with the customer complaint until it was resolved.  Good job!"

"You were very patient and understanding with the upset student."
