I hope your 2010 is off to a great start!
In this first Communique' of the new year, I return to my speaking roots and revisit what has become known as one of my signature stories: "Green Jello."
This conflict resolution story stars my now-teenage daughter when she was 4 years old and having a meltdown because I wouldn't give her a second green jello--of a four-pack--while I was fixing Sunday breakfast.
The story focuses on the resulting conflict between me and my then-husband over whether or not she should have another jello. (I voted no; he voted yes!).
Featured below are what I now refer to as the TWO "green jello" principles of conflict resolution. Use these to better understand and respond to your conflicts at work and home!

TWO GREEN JELLO PRINCIPLES
of Conflict Resolution
Principle #1: Figure out the real agenda
At work and home, the real agenda is sometimes hidden beneath the superficial, proverbial green jello. Sometimes it involves ego, turf, power, control or other self serving issues.
Ask yourself: Are we fighting over the proverbial green jello?
Find out what's really going on by using such phrases as:
"I'm getting the impression that..."
"It seems like..."
"What else concerns you?"
Pinciple #2: Have a Plan B (or C, D...)
The goal is to have as many conflict resolution options in mind as possible AND be open to options proposed by the other person. Ask:
"What are our options?"
"What do you need from me?"
"How can we make this work?"
