Sarita's Five Favorites from the book -"The Rules of Love: A Personal Code for Happier, More Fulfilling Relationships"
Rule #9: You can't change people
Don't think you can change someone. You won't. You'll just make both of you miserable. The other person may choose to change certain behaviors, but won't be able to change their basic personality. Rule #16: Don't paint new partners with old brushes Most of us have a past. Don't let that get in the way of the next partnership...personally or in business. Rule #28: Accept the differences; embrace what you have in common Better yet, don't just accept differences...see the benefit in it. The best teams contain people with different strengths. Rule #43: Know when to listen and when to act Sometimes people just want you to validate their feelings of upset, anger or hurt by listening and acknowledging with an occasional "uh-huh." If you're not sure, ask: "Do you want my advice or do you just need to get it off your chest?" Rule #95: Know when to let go If they're no longer contributing anything positive to your life, and nor are you to theirs, make a conscious decision to end it. Explain that you feel the partnership isn't benefiting either of you. |
